Hi Liz, personally i would change anyway as you would find the freelander better on fuel solo as well as towing and no doubt cheaper to tax and insure these days. I have never owned or driven a freelander but my old discovery 300tdi auto used to return about 35 mpg wether it was solo or towing but then i do have a tendency to use the throttle gently, with this in mind i think the figures quoted for the freelander are valid at around 35 to 40 mpg.

on the other subject that has crept in to this thread we had our car insurance renewal last week from them with the big red phone, it came as a shock to find that it had gone up from less than

We have the X-Trail and our friends have the Freelander 2.0 diesel.

When we go on long tows to Spain etc he puts in about 1/2 gallon less than I do for each fill. His van is lighter than ours so the cars are almost equal at 25mpg towing.

I met a guy in Brittany last week with an X-Trail and a Senator Indiana who claimed to get 35mpg towing and nearly 50mpg solo.

The same guy was flying the Royal Standard flag and when asked assured me that HRH was in residence.

Hi Liz

The new Freelander is due out in the not to distant future, it's worth a look on Whatcar.com to see it. They reckon it will be capable of towing around 2000 kg as it's heavier than the current model.

Val & Frank

ps they reckon more economical as well !!!!

We have been down the same road as u liz, looking at freelanders, what put us of this model was not the fuel consumption but the reliability problems of the freelander(both diesel+petrol).I posted on here and honest johns, the response i got was amazing and made me wary of expensive repair costs.I did not like the idea of buying a japanese 4x4 as was being suggested,we looked at loads of freelanders but changed our mind after viewing and driving a nissan x-trail,we are now owners+have towed our sterling europa 3 times, returning approx 30mpg,it also tows no problem, also consider the new freelander will hit values off second hand old models when u come to re-sell hope this helps u make the right choice- andrew.
