To chip or not to chip, who,s done is it worth while, pros & cons please. J.Lo

Don't chip remap it gives you a better fuel to air mix and a better all round performance. MPG was up from @30 to 34 mpg solo but towed from 30mph with a Abbey420 GTS Vogue in 5 th gear and solo would out perform many small hatchbacks.Which solo was pretty dower before remap which was done by Land Rover specialist in Laurencekirk Aberdeenshire.

I would say don't chip it, we put a chip on our one when we first got it and thought it was excellent,good ecomony etc. but after a while we were getting black smoke when we pulled away and it was really sluggish.

once we removed the chip the smoke stopped and it seemed to run much better is has now done 1440000 miles so not too bad.

The black smoke is due to chip pumping more fuel and not adjusting O2 that is wh remap is way to go.##Ian

The chip only adds fuel at key points but does not adjust 02 that is why remap is way to go.

Remap or chip are both modifications to the standard vehicle. You should inform your insurance.

Hi J.Lo have a look at these web sites www.tuning-diesels.com they sell a Synergy 2 plug in tuning box for Freelander. Been thinking about getting one of these myself. Do a search on www.landyzone.co.uk and go to the Freelander section lots of info on there about them. Everyone seems to think they are well worth it.

This has been spoken about before,and is a can of worms.i would,nt advise anyone to start adjusting engine parameters.as said there are insurance issues,added driveline strain,warranty problems etc.The tuning boxs are crude resister packs,the remap is generally a genetic recalibration that some tom, dick and harry,s come up with on his panasonic cf51 toughbook in his spare time.If things were that easy the manufactorers would do it.They spend millons on EDC systems,then a back street firm improves it?dont think so.

The figures they give are utter bull,what happens if the engine fails after a remap,will they stand by it?forget it.

I had my alhambra re mapped (05 plate tdi 130) and had nothing but praise for the increased fuel economy and what appeared to better drivability, howevermany on this forum will remember the catostrofic failure of the alhambras engine at just 23 thousand miles old which came about due to the re map "over fuelling" and filling the sump with diesel which mixed with the oil and destroyed the engine. the intercooler turbo and every pipe and orifice had oil and diesel in it.

these devices are really not worth the hassle, it cost me
