Fridges

Hi all

Can anybody tell me why my 2 year old fridge does not cool down when on 240 volt on startup but will on gas.The heat exchanger heats up when on 240 volt but it does not cool even after 12 hours. Any simple answers or does anybody know. I fitted fridge fans during the summer? but these should have no bearing on it.

Thank you

Barry

Hello Barry,

The fact that the fridge seems to work on gas is a useful indicator that the refrigerant is still charged and capable of working.

The second fact you give tells us that the 230V element is working as you can feel the heat from it, so that leaves us with the element not being correctly located, Or a fault with the wiring which is creating a hot spot.

Does it work on 12V dc when connected to the car?

As access to this area of the fridge involves moving the fridge from its fixed position it will almost certainly need disconnecting from the gas supply. That means the job must be done by a competent person working to the gas regulations.

I've come across 240v elements with the wrong lower resistance than it should be, this has the effect of overheating the 'workings' and the fridge does not cool down.

You need a multimeter but the resistance across the two wire from the element should be roughly 500 ohms, the faulty ones I've measured are around 370 ohms.
