That's no camper van. Must have been terriying for anyone in the vicinity especially if they were also filling up with fuel. We can only speculate how the fine started.

The worrying thing is that a proportion of American Motor homes are petrol...
More than likely that was a petrol one as diesel is very hard to ignite. Chuck diesel onto a fire and the fire will probably go out.

It does not look like the tank went up as that would have produced a serious explosion. A couple of gallons of petrol could blow the side off a house. Best guess is they left the fridge on and the pilot light caused petrol fumes to ignite, but it is only a guess. and assumes a gas fridge. It could be nothing more than a short circuit and the location was just unfortunate.

you are probably correct the fire is certainly at the front where the fridge would be, american vehicle fridges only run on gas or mains and you are supposed to shut off the fridge before filling as the naked flame is not far from the vent, Dometic do a safety conversion kit and will fit it for you to try and stop fires being caused by the fridge gas pilote light (there is a lot of very bare wood framing in that area). Ive had the conversion/upgrade done on the last 2 american units i have had. The house LPG tank and fill point is on the right hand side of the vehicle near the rear and the petrol/diesel tank fill point is just over halfway down the vehicle on the left side Rvers tend to drive with the gas fridge on especially if going some distance to keep the frozen stuff froze
