Gas conversion

Hi

I have been towing with an LPG 4.0 jeep grand cherokee all year and am very impressed with both performance and economy.People say you get less performance on gas but i havent noticed any differance and the MPG seems to be very slightly less on gas but not much.

I have a tom tom sat nav with LPG stations as points of interest (a free download) and have towed around devon,the lake district and the north east and have never struggled to find gas.Costs vary from 42p to 49p a litre which is a huge saving,i reckon my outlay will be returned in about 12000 miles then it is pure saving.

Only thing i would say is that your conversion must come with correct LPG certificate,i have heard horror stories of botched installations.

Regards

Sean

Hi Richard

Our last 3 cars have been LPG conversions (currently a Range Rover 4.6 HSE, previously a Disco and another Range Rover). We tow a large twin axle and my husband tells me (as I don't drive!) that he barely notices any difference between running on petrol and gas. You can buy a map book showing LPG filling stations (with updates on a web site). And of course LPG is so much cheaper than petrol or diesel.

Over the last few years, I have towed with an LPG Shogun - had it converted - and a 2.0 Vectra estate with a factory fitted system.

I endorse all the comments of the previous posts, the Vectra was even London Congestion charge exempt - in all an LPG car is a win win option.

The only downsides I encountered were that there is virtually no gas in Spain and you cannot take the vehicle on the chunnel.

Hi Richard

We tow our Bailey Senator Arizona (1500Kg)with our Vauxhall Monterey 3.3 V6 4x4 (rebadged Isuzu Trooper). I had the car converted when we bought it in 2001. It cost

Just a couple of points to watch before carrying out a conversion;

In some cases a gas conversion reduces the maximum permissible towload. In order not to jeopardize warranty coverage, it would be wise to check with the car manufacturer first.

Also, the gas conversion increases the kerbweight of the towcar but as the GVW remains unaffected, it will reduce the available payload.

I know nothing about LPG conversions but having read the other posts they are all big engines (except the vauxhall) and i wonder if this has a bearing on 'no significant loss of power'. If I was considering it I would be interested in reports from people with 2.0litre cars.
