Finally after looking at 25+ cars I have found a Rover 75 cdti connoisseur SE tourer.
Thanks to everyone on the forum who gave me tips and advice, it has been invaluable in my search.
Settled on a 51 plate with checkable history and all the toys working.
Pulls like a train and does 43Mpg at average motorway speeds of today.

Steve, I had an o2 Club Se Cdt Tourer that I had remapped for a little extra power, by far the best car I've ever owned and towed with, easily doing around 31/33 with our caravan on the back, when I part exchanged it for my current car it had 214 thousand miles on it and it still pulled our caravan like it's just come out of the show room, I hope yours is at least half as good as mine was, if it is or better than you'll be very very happy with it

So far so good with the car. Got 41Mpg towing my goods trailer with a bulk bag of sand in it yesterday. If it keeps that up I will be a happy bunny.

I never thought I would go away from Renaults after owning 18 since 1984, but messure Renault, you now make cars that breakdown too often and don't wear well either. My 1998 Laguna did 206'000 very good miles for me, but it was time for change.

I'm an advocate of buying british but only if it is good value, to me getting a car that must of been in the mid 30K's when new, but came to me nicely run in with 100K motorway miles and full service history for under 2K was a steal. I certaily think they have more character and better build quality than it's BMW partner that it shares the same drive train with.

My favorite toy is the electric drivers seat. I have set a position for driving and one for entry & exit of the car into the memory, so that I can get in far easier with my arthritic shoulders and a compressed disc in my back. No more knocking myself senseless on the door frame as I did on the Laguna.

I had two of them. The first was a 114bhp 1999 saloon, and the second a 2004 131bhp estate. Both were excellent towcars, but the estate was the best. The only issues I had were the rubbish Bosch MAF's (easily sorted if you search Roverron) and alternators. The estate's failed on the Paris Peripherique, whilst towing and took eight days to sort! The car had only done 20,000 miles at the time. Would I have another? Deffinately! As Nigel D says, they're grossly underrated.

I only changed because like me, caravans are putting on too much weight!

Enjoy it.

http://tuning-diesels.com/index2n.htm.or just do a search of roverron. Steve. I believe he has a section on a MG rover forum.
Old style proper British chap [engineer] Who has know about MAF deteriorating for over a decade and how to do cheap fixes, or even decent digital tuning boxes [British made] at decent prices

Totally agree with JonnyG. I had the Pierburgh replacement MAF and Synergy 2 from Ron. Car was superb afterwards (even though I only used a mid-setting on the Synergy). A brand new Bosch MAF was iffy, and the dealers came up with some rubbish about it "could be this or could be that". The Pierburgh and Synergy cured all ills. Ron is a thoroughly good chap too, and always very helpful.
