Hi Jo-Anne
Just logged on and seen your posting. I currently have towed with a 3.0V6 CRD Grand Cherokee, I appreciate it is not the model you asked about , however it has one of the smoothest engines (mercedes) and the automatic gearbox is again one of the finest, it has plenty of torque so will tow anyvan with ease and is very comfortable. Fuel consumption for a vehicle of its size and power is reasonable 20 -22mpg towing an 1800kg t/a and if I take it easy 30 - 33 solo. Many less powerfull vehicles strugle to get anywhere near these figures.
If your budget can stretch to the CRD then I would recomend giving it a try. given the choice between the 3.1 or 2.7, I would opt for a late 2.7, again very able tow car , I know several friends who have them and they have no complaints.

I can mirror Delt1c - I have a 3.0CRD Jeep Grand Cherokee towing a Twin Axle Lunar (MTPLM 1,790KG) - it is excellent, you always feel in control, it storms up hills, and if you choose to, maintaining the legal speed limits is never a problem.
Only drawback for me is the MPG - as previously posted it is a thirsty motor but then most 3.0 litres lugging over 3tons will be.
One thing I will say for it is that in the two and a half years that I have had it, it has never had a mechanical problem and I managed to get 42,000 miles out of the Goodyear Wrangler tyres (servicing costs are a little steep though because for one thing this particular engine uses a low sulphur oil that is B expensive).

I've had both the 3.1 and the 2.7 variants and they are excellent towcars, they'll lug a heavy twin-axle up hill and down dale all day. The engines are Merc as is the auto box, fuel consumption solo is as you would expect with a full-blown auto 4 x 4, and around 20mpg with a heavy twin-axle on the back.
We had 5 Jeeps so obviously we were pretty happy with them, all brand new or low mileage ex-demos, but they all required significant work over the roughly 60000 miles we had each of them, fortunately always covered by warranty. This I have to say, is in stark contrast to the humble Sorento, currently on our second, with which simply nothing goes wrong!!

Only the 2.7 is a Mercedes unit which is quite reliable ,the 3.1 is a Verducci Minelli (italian unit) and not rated that well as the heads are know to warp and crack.
The autobox in the 2.7 is a mercedes unit but altered so different than the unit fitted in the Mercedes cars same goes with the engine

Hi jo-anne
We have a 2004 2.7 Ltd which we bought new and tow a 2007 Crusader Super Sirocco which we find very stable. On average we get 21-25 mpg towing and have been to France every year since new with usually a 1500 mile round trip and have found it an excellent tow car. It is just coming up 50000 and apart from new front discs / pads and new tyres it has never missed a beat. Would like a current 3.0 though. Not much difference in the overland just has sunroof different seats and wheels. I would keep away from the 3.1 though as others have said. Google 2011 Grand Cherokee!

Not actualy had an LPG , but from what I have heard there should be little difference from the petrol. With the price of LPG it means similair fuel costs to the diesel. However for me I would still look at a diesel for the Torque.

LPG is less potent than petrol so you would see a 15%-20% drop in power and mpg.
The LPG price per litre is approx just half of petrol per litre so roughly on a 20 mpg car (petrol) running on lpg you would get around the 30 mpg mark for the same price as petrol.
When towing the engine has to work harder so this will really hit economy with 15-20% less power.
Friend had an LPG Voyager with a tank in place of the spare wheel, this had only a capacity of 42 litres so only had a range of 90 miles whilst towing , ended up using petrol all the time because the lack of service stations not on the main road,Devon and Cornwall not good.
Ive seen the tanks fitted across the boot but these do sweat making the car damp

Hi Jo,

My name's Rory, I'm the reporter on the magazine - noticed your question about the Grand Cherokee.

It's a funny one this because if you ask some people, they'll tell you that the car has strong diesel engines but a rubbish chassis and soft suspension making it a fidgety towcar. However I've been in them towing boats and although I wasn't driving I honestly thought it towed quite well. Also, countless people on these forums praise the car for how well it performs.

I just thought I'd say my brother works for an Alpha Romeo/Jeep/Chrysler franchise dealer in Bournemouth and drives/sells these everyday, new and second hand. If you want any info from him I can pass his details on. It's there if you need it!

Thanks

Rory
