I would like to make people aware of what happed to us when we went to France in the summer. Unfortunately, we broke down on the ferry coming home and the caravan had to be taken off the ferry by one of the dock shunters. When finally going home with the caravan we had a very scary moment as the caravan snaked unexpectedely at modest speed. It wasn't until we got home that we found the towball & hitch gunged up with grease (obviously from the shunter) and had no stability working. All cleaned out now & back to normal with a noticable difference.

Unless you were driving under adverse conditions such as heavy crosswinds, the caravan should not be snaking even if the stabiliser isn't working. The stabiliser shouldn't be a necessity but only additional protection to increase the margin of safety.
