Hello there. We have always really toured Scotland. This year we thought about somewhere rural still but perhaps Yorkshire.I know little about the area.We would be looking for a site with access to countryside walks and perhaps within driving distance of a childrens attraction. We have two children of primary school age and a lovely, active dog. Help much appreciated. Thanks :)

Hi Cara
The Yorkshire Dales are beautiful and there are so many places to choose from. Hawes is a good walking area with lots of interesting spots and very pretty villages nearby. The CC site in Hawes (Brown Moor site) is within about 5 minutes walk from the village but there are other sites nearby. Wensleydale Cheese Factory (Wallace & Gromit!!) is in Hawes village and within walking distance from the site. Whitescar Caves at Ingleton is worth a visit as is Ingleton Falls. A really good day out to go with children is The Fobidden Corner near Leyburn within easy driving distance of Hawes. (you do need to book in advance for this, otherwise you won't allow you in, but it's well worth going - kids will love it! (Website is www.theforbiddencorner.co.uk). Grassington is a pretty village and a good place to stay for walking (again the CC have a site there (Long Ashes) and is quite near Malham Cove & Tarn. Give Yorkshire a try you won't be disappointed!!

Head a bit further south into North Derbyshire. With the peak district and all it has to offer , climbing, potholing, major cities, etc. Lots of safe bike rides , country houses and castles although probably not too appealing for the 8 to 12 year olds. Matlock, Castleton, Eadale, Eyam, Chatsworth, loads of places. Lots of old , disused rail routes for easy cycling and walking.
There are outdoor adventure centers offering cragging, climbing , potholing.

Then again look towards staying in W Yorks and you have easy access to Skipton, Harrogate,Leeds, Derbyshire, York, not too far to Scarborough and Whitby, as prev poster mention theres Malham( fantastic place). You would be very close to the peak district.
Wharfedale, the Ribble , there is xscape in Castleford ( indoor winter sports),eureka in halifax, magna in sheffield.

Loads to do, but it all depends on what kids 8 to 12 would like. I have difficulty getting my 10yr old out of bed these days.

Hawes for me its an excellent site, we go their at least once a year for the walking, around September l think their is a walking festival also in September they have the morris dancers. Theirs a brilliant restaurants opposite the bank where the road divides into one way, cracking chippie. Were their for my Birthday middle of August for ten days.

Grassington is another good site, little bit further to walk for the village than Hawes and the new site at Barnard castle has now opened, all in all some wonderful sites in the dales.

Hi cara, firstly I would like to coment on your signiture, I think it is lovely. We all to often loose track of where we are in life and reading that helps put it back into perspective a bit. OK, so I am feeling sorry for myself but never mind.
I can totally agree with the posts that sugest Derbyshire and Hawes, they are two beutifull places to be and there are lots of walks there. Are you based in Scotland and is that why you dont venture away much. I dont blame you really. There are places up there I would not want others to know about and would guard them gealously. I love it around Glen Devon and along the road to Glen Eagles, I nearly got snowed in at a pub along from Glen devon once but just my luck the snow plow came along and spoilt it.
Wherever you choose I hope you have a great time.

Cara, try West Ayton CC site Nr Scarborough. There are some great walks in the area i.e Ravenscar to Robinhoods Bay via the old railway line and back via the Cleavland Way coastal path, 8 miles in all. Then you have some great walks into and around the Hole of Horicum not forgeting walks along the vally direct from the site which also has a good dog walk. Scarborough, Whitby and Bridlington all worth a visit but dogs arnt allowed on some parts of the beaches at all these from May - September. This realy is a lovely part of Yorkshire with a lot of diversity. I.e. in town one minute and on the moors the next.
Hope thats some help.

CC site at Long Ashes is really nice and not too far to walk into Grassington. Also not far from Kettlewell and plenty walking. If you like the coast Middlewood Farm at Robin Hood's Bay is really nice - there is a walk to the beach (with rock pools which children generally love) and into the village direct from the site. Through fields/farm and down cliff path. There's also a pub about 10 mins walk away with a hexagonal pool table which is on a turntable - very interesting.
