i find the hi-lux surf (import) 3.0l diesel an excellent car for towing,driving around fields on farm, or just s,d&p. they are quite cheap now and if you get an old one, the road tax is 'only' £190.00 as opposed to wife's Vectra which costs £220.00 to tax. the car has just got me out of 3' snow drifts in low box very good performance, and the best bit is you can use vegetable oil straight out of supermarket at around 80p per litre. in winter i mix with diesel 50/50 and summer 75/25. i have done over 50,000 miles with no problems, just replace filters every 6,000 miles. my car has done 112,000 miles, but i still see others for sale with over 200,000 miles. great cars.

i like the idea of using cheap oil, but i understand that the latest engines don't like veg oil?

Common-rail diesels don't like "chip-shop" or "home-made" fuel - they operate at much higher pressures than older diesels and the lack of lubricating qualities soon wrecks the high-pressure pump.

Common-rail diesels are OK on E85 Bio-diesel because the EN590 standard includes lubrication specification.

that's quite right Roger, for a list of vehicles that do indeed run on veg oil try 'googling' "veg oil fuel" there is a lot of different cars doing this, you can also download exemption data from hmrc website regarding duty, but if you use less than 2500 litres per year then none is due. cheers. p.s car runs quieter with no loss of performance,and smells braw!
