we currently tow a 94 pageant champagne with a 52 plate mg zs 2.5 v6.plenty of power but a bit light and can be thirsty.irecently went to see a 05 mondeo 130 ghia x.car looked mint inside and out....but had 82k on the clock.ithought7k was a fair price but nervous about putting a hitch and towing after car had done so many miles.full history with car and obviously all reps motorway miles.the same car with say 25k on clock would cost over 10 grand.i live in cornwall and cars are more expensive here than in the midlands/london and you cant just go up countryand buy a car when tou need to p/x.was i right to shy away or should i have took the plunge?

If there is one thing a Mondeo is good for that is covering very high mileages, and I mean 150k plus.

Providing the car has been properly maintained so far, and you keep on top of things in the future including doing some items over and above the service plan, eg changing the transmission oil and checking major items a bit more frequently than Ford suggest you should find that it will serve you well, even with your pageant on the rear.

Hi Dominic

I too live in Cornwall and can agree with you on Cornish prices.

82k is nothing if the car has fsh - Ghia X is a top model and a 130bhp Turbo diesel should make for a brilliant towcar. Is the car a one owner?

I travelled to Salisbury to buy my first Landcruiser and to Harrogate [Yorkshire] for my present LC. I always give the local garages the prices available up country and if they get somewhere near a match then I will buy here, otherwise I am prepared to travel.

Did you buy the car today?

During your test drive listen for any clonks coming from the back. The rear suspension is quite complex & has a lot of bushes & links that can wear out.

Hi, my wife has a 2001 Ghia diesel with 86k and it still drives well and the engine uses no oil. Ona recent trip to Kent and then to Wales the trip recorder showed 60mpg. Admittedly I was driving it steadily but it never drops below 48mpg overall. Yes I know that it could be raeding up to 10% optimistic but even so it's very economical. Servicing is cheap and it's been very reliable. I have owned a Mondeo of each marque and found them to be very good cars. The Sorento will be traded for a Mondeo or S-max when I go dwon to one car. 30-32mpg is too heavy on fuel even at today's prices.
