Honda CR-V towball weight

I was hoping to buy a used Honda CR-V to tow my Bailey Pageant MPLW 1313kg, but my dealer advises that all CR-Vs before 2006 have a max towball weight of 60kg. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to legally increase that weight by fitting uprated rear springs? E-mails to Honda UK and local dealers have been ignored.

Norman, I had a 2002 CRV and made enquiries with Honda regarding uprating the nose weight limit. They advised that there was no way to do this. Even if you were able to buy uprated springs etc on the specialist market the noseweight limit of 60kg set by Honda would still stand . Honda were in danger of loosing future sales so uprated to 100kg in 2005.

Having said all that I had a Compass 5 berth with MPTLM of 1350kg and with careful loading could just about get down

to it ( or near enough not to worry about it).

I'm afraid they're right Norman. I've a 52 plated CRV. I think it was 2005 when they took out the diesel model, and uprated the nose weight on all models to 100kg.

Slightly off topic but you could get a second hand A4 Avant, or a nice Volvo V70 for the same price. The CRV's a good car but thats what i'd go for if i could turn back the clock,

Low noseweights rarely have anything to do with springs and suspensions. Usually, it's due to structural underbody durability limitations.

Just to make you aware, we were following a CR-V a few years ago towing an ABI- cant remember which model but it certainly did not seem out of place on the car, However, the noseweight was clearly too high as the back of the car was really being dragged down. all of a sudden the outfit started to snake badly, and this was on a fine summers day on a straight main road in north Essex, he did regain control eventually, but not before all of us behind him had slowed to about 25mph. I was also towing and didnt have a problem so I dont think it was down to a road defect.

I don't know a lot about the CR-V or how stable they normally are but bear it in mind.

I must take issue with the last line of your post of 20th Dec 01:22 pm.

The inference you invoke suggest that the you can exceede the rated hitch load specified by the manufacture. - If you do you are breaking the law, and your insurance is in jeopardy.

You must keep the the loads on the vehicle and trailer withing the manufactures specified limits.
