Hymer Nova battery charger replacement

I have just had to replace the charger in my 2007 Hymer Nova, this the second one, the first "blew" after a couple of months, so replaced under warranty. Not in my wildest dreams did I envisage another one going. But it did (now outside warranty) the replacement has cost a total of £536.66 plus the cost of a new battery. We were away when the charger blew and I did not realise until the battery started failing, so ended up with it not retaining a charge.

Has anyone else had this problem?
 
A colleague has twice had his repaired by Schaudt for a fraction of your replacement cost. Its probably a 2004/5 Hymer Nova and I recall a price of about

The bit that worries me is the reference to "shifting the neutral point".

I have encountered in France a situation where the phases were out of balance, the neutral was 60volts above earth, but my Schaudt Unit survived.

I was looking at the OVP 01 to use my Honda generator with more confidence, but that article and my French experience indicates I ought to buy one anyway.
 
In my colleagues case the actual time of the charger failures was unknown in that the battery was still being charged very effectively when he was towing. It was only when on site for a long time he found it was not being charged from the EHU.

He had travelled to France on both occasions before knowing the Schaudt had failed, so out of balance phases could well be the cause of his failures. Interesting?
 
I also had one fail on a 2006 Nova, this was in 2008. I checked the wiring diagram and there was a small fuse on the board inside the case, so I opened it up and replaced the fuse. On testing there was a huge bang as the board exploded! I therefore put the original blown fuse back in, resealed the case, and told the supplying dealer that it had appeared to fail, and they changed the whole thing FOC.

The OVP device might be a good idea though, anyone any idea where to get it from?

Thanks for the info - I will look into it.

We go abroad a lot, but only within the EU. Having said that though I think wiring could be dodgy anywhere if you are out of luck.

Risk of overvoltage is particulary high, e.g. mains operation when travelling abroad, especially in non-EU countries.....

On a CL in this country and with the first it would have been in the UK

What puzzles me as to why Hymer does not fit this OVP devise or advise that one should be fitted.

Hello, I know this is an old thread but it keeps coming up in searches on issues with the Schaudt Elecktroblock units like the CSV409 fitted to the Hymers.
We repair them, and 99.9 times out of 100 they are damaged by a battery past their best, not any other problem.
I know the forums are full of stories of mains 240v Mains issues but it is incorrect. We have now repaired thousands of chargers from all Caravan/Motorhome Manufacturers and they all, including the Schaudt chargers, use similar components/technology for inbuilt Spike/Surge protection.
The OVP 01 is not a Spike/Surge protector it is a Over Voltage Protector that cuts power to the protected device if the Mains input voltage goes outside preset limits. It is a relatively slow acting unit that will let through the majority of Spikes/Surges. It is designed to trap slow rising voltage changes, such as those from a spluttering Generator. See our OVP01 website page and read the Schaudt manual. You will see it makes no claims in respect of Spikes/Surges.
