We want to buy a Santa Fe (54 reg) but need to know whether there are any issues with fitting a tow bar. Does this vehicle suffer from any complications in fitting that could mean we get caught in a dealers trap of pay thousands or loose the warranty. (NB> we have just found out that we would have to pay between £1200 & £2000 for a towbar on our Audi A4 Avant due the electrics being fibre optic plus various system upgrades!

I have a 54 reg Santa Fe and had a towbar put on by my local garage,3 1/2 yrs ago , consideraby cheaper than the Hyundai dealership and there were no problems in sourcing it through the internet or fitting it, nor any problems when it was in another Hyundai dealership for repair just before expiry of 5 year warrantyin August 2009( it needed 3 "core plugs" replaced whatever they may be, but I do not think that this is a common problem in this model, I think I was just unlucky ) If you are going to buy a 54 it will be out of Hyundai 5 year warrenty now anyway. I do not tow much, so cannot comment on that ability, but I drive 46 miles a day to and from work and it is very reliable, the core plugs being the only problem in 4 1/2 years with just under 70,000 miles on now .The only other complaint that I could make is that the steering is a little vague, compared to some other cars I have had. They do depreciate from new but you should be able to pick up a 54 at a very reasonable price, and have a sound good tow car with plenty extras re spec.

The car is a 54 plate, and thus is almost certainly out of time with regard to the manufactures guarantee.
If you have any guarantee it will be the supplying dealer, or an insurance policy who covers the car, and they are usually quite limited as to what they cover. You need to read the small print of the arguments you have.
If you have a towbar fitted by any one who offers a commercial service, then when you ask them to do it tell them in writing that they are responsible for ensuring the towbar and the electrics work properly and that the cars systems continue to work properly - that will then form part of the contract for fitting.
If any part of the car the subsequent fails as a direct result of the towbar fitment, the fitter is legally responsible to effect proper repairs and to get the systems working again.
The only sure way of avoiding complications is to use an authorised fitter for the make of vehicle and to use original parts from the car manufacture, then there can be no excuses

be careful who you get. we had a well know company arraged by our hyundai dealer to fit a towbar to santafe when it was new (57plate). 6 months later the elec on the car light etc were going out and fuses were blowing. to cut a long story short we was in devon it went again took it to the local dealer and they striped the car and found that the towbar fitter had drilled a hole in the santafe when he didnt need to and put the wiring that tight and no grommit on the hole that the wiring was chaffing at the hole. The wiring got that hot it melted into the sound deadning and eventually would have caught fire.
the devon dealership replaced all the wiring and were here to tell the tale.
