Interesting article on towing with an EV

Part of their test drive leaves a question of what were they trying to prove? Why detour onto Dartmoor's narrow roads and why use the A38 over the Tamar Bridge, the A30 is a much better route.
I was wondering the same, but it still does not get away from the hassle of recharging when you are towing a caravan which is why I emphasised that part.

The Ioniq9 is a really big vehicle in comparison to the EV9 that was actually towing. Makes you wonder why buy such a large vehicle that is only an EV and has such a low towing capacity? You might as well buy a smaller SUV which has a higher towing capacity and more range.

I notice another article here comparing doing the NC500 with caravans, one in an EV and one in an ICE.
The article is a little hard to follow, mainly because of the annoying add placement, but the experience seems to have been a good one.

A larger vehicle does allow for a larger battery, with corresponding greater range but for people who don't tow a smaller batter may be acceptable.

The recharging hassle is a big issue - the need to leave the caravan away from the charging area is a deal-breaker for me, leaving a frail old lady in charge of its security is a non-starter!

I'd rather have the SQ7 and pay the extra for fuel!

It's disappointing that they found their initial plan of 100 miles between EV recharges to be too optimistic and the 85 miles was more realistic - that's stopping every hour and a half needing 3 overnight stops in an EV for Gloucester-John O'Groats whereas 1 overnight stop is easy with a diesel, as I've done similar a few times.

I notice that they skip over the hassle of disconnecting and securing the caravan while charging the car. Also needing to stop every 85 miles. I genuinely thought that if towing it would have been a minimum of at least 125 miles. Like Roger the SQ7 would be the better choice for towing long distance.

No personal experience but I did see an abandoned and unsecured caravan at Telford services on the M54. Turns out the Electric Car towing had left the caravan in the Coach bays, which are next to the caravan area, to drive back round to the car park where the charging bays were. Convenient. But things may improve in time.

Some subject overlap on the HubNut YouTube channel: Ian tows a folding camper with a variety of ICE cars, but he recently took a little Hyundai Inster from the west coast of Wales to Scotland, albeit solo.

He does make comparisons with the bigger Ioniq 5, and his identical trip in an BEV some years ago. His main issue wasn't really the location or availability of chargers but them being broken , seemingly incompatible with this brand new car and expensive compared to home charging. Well worth a watch.

We will be off for our first tow with our new tow car on Sunday. I have moved from my trusty Polestar 2 to a Polestar 4. Bigger battery (96kWh vs 75kWh), higher towing limit (2000kg vs 1500kg) and higher noseweight (100kg vs 90kg). Heading from South Northamptonshire down to the new forest. Will report back on return!
