Quote: "But a "traveller" is a showman i.e. Fairground person so it could get confusing"

The definition of a "Traveller" from the Oxford English Dictionary is as follows
1. A Person who is travelling or travels often.
2. A Gypsy or other nomadic person.
3. A person who holds New Age values and leads an itinerant and unconventional lifestyle.

So, there is no confusion at all.
You call a Showman a Traveller and I will show you a person with a black eye for doing so !!!

Yes that is correct, you had finished the training and were fully skilled in the job you did but there is one other step to become a Master Craftsman.
Sadly this does not happen in todays working environment and the Master Craftsman is almost a thing of the past.
Similarly in the motor trade there are very few Mechanics in the true sense of the word, they are just "Fitters" now as they do not strip down and repair components, just bung a new item on,,,,,,,,,IF the computer says so !!!!

Yes so true, I retired 3 and a half years ago as a Licenced Aircraft Engineer on helicopters, I still have a year on my licence, . My last Helicopter was just a big flying computer.

Just a lot of nuts, bolts and rivets flying in close formation. :p

Bit like my last XC70 the nuts and bolts were all interconnected with a multiplicity of mini computers hidden all over the car.

I guess it doesn't matter what the dictionary says, my business is Corporate Entertainment, we own a few marquees and toilet blocks that go to parties, events etc. (Nothing to do with my caravan side) At the moment im at a big Christmas party venue I have bits there from mid Nov to mid Jan. There is also 6 big fairground rides here and today over coffee ive been speaking to the guys who own them about what names they are referred to and they all said "travelers". They are showmen, and dont mind being called that but that title is usually only used by members of the Showmans Guild, and also funfair ride owners, I asked what the others are referred to and unfortunately i cant print the words. Apperantly there is a mutual hate between them. Joskins is a word in the dictionary that is a country bumkin and yet in the fairground industry a Joskin is a non showman, a "gatherer" is the police, so it appears they have their own language. So as i referred to a showman as a traveler i got away with no black eye, but we did have a laugh.

Sadly there are still some caravans who regularly park overnight on the a82 Loch Lomond side - generally being towed by this style of vehicle

none of which are of the hobby style of caravan may I add - when the occupants finally decide to move on the lay-by is like a tip - I think it’s fairly easy to identify the leisure caravanner from the “commercial” shall we say caravanner - towing your unit with a commercial type vehicle may cause others to question your true identity

I've removed the last two comments.

While I accept that not all caravans towed by the Transit pick up are Hobbys, two large caravans towed by Transit pick ups have appeared on a trading estate near us and they are.

This thread is beginning to change from the original query into a discussion about the traveling community.
Because such discussions have historically bordered on hate speech I urge forum members to stick very narrowly to the original subject matter otherwise I will lock this topic.
Discussion regarding the traveling community, whichever caravans or towing vehicles that they may or may not use belong elsewhere.
