I see plenty of Landrover Defenders and Disco's, Range Rovers, Land Cruisers, Lexus, Mercedes, VW Caravelles and Tuaregs, etc, etc. towing caravans. All of those manufacturers have models more expensive than a basic Cayenne.

Is someone with a cheaper car towing an expensive caravan equally worthy of criticism as a caravanner that chooses a Cayenne and maybe a cheaper caravan? Is the CAMC wrong to include cars for all budgets in their reviews?

You are correct.

But, imho, the clubs are, just like motoring reporters and magazines. Guilty of promoting suggestive selling or upselling. (That’s the job of the dealers), The media should be providing a more balanced view across the ranges. More on budget and mid-range for cars and caravans.

I think that manufacturers tend to provide reviewers with the higher end models.

Sub concisely many people are overstretching themselves as a consequence.

A bit like Top Gear. It started life as a down to earth motoring programme, but it morphed into supercars. (But I still watched it). Fith gear though gives sencible reviews, but not broadcast very often.

I admit to being guilty of falling for it, being one of those who likes to have the extras provided by the top of the range.

I think that the average caravanner who are probably the vast majority and not a niche group would have an average car. We have a second hand Jeep that was already over 4 years old when purchased as no way could be afford a new Jeep out of the box.

Our caravan may be top end, but we probably spend more time in the caravan than the car plus we relax, sleep and cook in the caravan. Also we have a drink! LOL!

Seems the same applies when reviewing a caravan. Sometimes I think the journalist just sticks their head in through the door to have a look and then writes and indepth review!

I think this year’s selection of cars for the TCOY reflects the changing market place whereby EV and PHEV sales are being pushed by the makers as more drivers are changing. I was quite surprised at the number of electrified vehicles in the trials fleet. Whether they meet the needs of existing or new caravanners is their choice.

I totally agree with that, but if you were a journalist, offered a weeks loan of a Cayenne to review and found it to be an excellent towing car. Should you temper your review to appease the vast majority of us who drive average cars? How many of us has never thought "what would I buy if I won £1m" I haven't read the publication myself and so, cannot comment either way, but I think it would be helpful to list the "best cars in price bands, eg, best under £80k, best under £50k, best under £30k, even best under £5k for those looking for a low cost s/h car with enough tug to do the job.
I am also pretty cynical about "best" anything lists, because they are usually weighted in favour of suppliers who benefit the reviewer most, eg by advertising, loan/giveaway kit or even monitory payment. It is the commercialised world we live in, so I take it with a pinch of salt, Malden Sea Salt of course, because all the sponsored cookbook publishers, etc. say it is the best.

The new Buccaneers are just under £47000, but still a hefty price. No wonder new caravan sales are dropping but once can be assured that some traditions will remain like poor quality. At least it is an expensive poor quality.

At least it will tow almost any normal caravan which is more than can be said for some earlier choices. The criteria though has very little to do with price, although value for money is factor. They are looking for the best tow car and if that is the Porsche is it, possibly the fact very few can afford it is irrelevant. It is all a matter of opinion though and with different people having different ones, no car can truly be the best for everyone or even most of us. Never had the chance to check it, so cannot say they are wrong.
There is an article on Caravan Times by the editor explaining his position and it is difficult to argue with that.
