I brought 2 boxes of them ok on grass, on hardstanding they are no use. I use rock pegs and a lump hammer.

We found our screw pegs worked best on hard standing, but we bought the metal pegs from Screwfix. They are known as coach screws.

Not long ago i posted a photo of some super long J pegs made out of steel spiral reinforcing bar. I’ve used similar and from my experience they hold anywhere, even very fine soil/sand pitches.

Viewing them, would they not be difficult to drive in, at least with a lump hammer, simply because you can't strike them in line with their shanks?

I never had a problem driving them into a the ground on a pitch. The only problem I have with reinforcing bar is emotional, as I lost a part of my right thumb to a bar as a guillotine came down in Cardiff GKN steelworks where I was working on production shifts. Ruined my bonus for that days shift!!!!

Don’t forget things like rebar may have sharp ends which in the wind may cause damage to the canvas and loops. For decades the screwpegs have served us well. Both the oem s and the Screwfix ones described by Buckman. The originals have sharpless tops that hook onto the canvas securing bands. No chance of damage in the wind.
Installation for years has been the hammer. Removal the claw hammer nail extractor.

Looking at the rebar is it easy to pull out of the ground🤔

Yes no problem removing them using good quality claw hammer. Wrt your comments I would use them on storm straps, and/or just at the corners of an awning in periods where bad weather was forecast. Sometimes would use them with extra guys on the awning. I first bought some when the standard awning pegs even with storm straps and guys just would not safely hold the awning at Freshwater East. CMHC. The hard pitches were sodden and composed of very fine aggregate/sand. After a sleepless night during a storm holding down the awning I went out to but the J pegs. Normally thought I’d use ordinary rock pegs with a spiral scroll down their length. I was never aware of the long J pegs made from reinforcing bar doing any damage to the awning or its loops. But you can get smooth variants too.
