Italian lakes

Can anyone suggest a route from Calais to the Italian Lakes, without hurtling along boring motorways? I don't care how long it would takes as I can allow a month for the trip. Getting there and back, is really all part of the holiday, which for me always starts a Dover.
 
We think the only way to go is Belgium, Germany, Black Forest, Innsbruck, Brenner Pass which is not boreing, to Lake Garda. Know some lovely sites on the way if you need to know anymore contact me.

I think you replied to my post re Sorrento!! We are thinking of taking this route to Italy in May this year. Could you please let me have details of the sites you have used and places to stop en route?
