We are thinking of buying a used Jag 2.2d sport estate, 55 or 06 plate, for about £ 15K.

Currently we have an avondale van with an MTPLM of 1250KG but may upgrade to approx 1500KG next year.

Would welcome any advice on the car and on whether the fact that they are only available with manual transmission is a problem.

Many thanks

Hi Jo,

I could be wrong but is there not a Mondeo ST estate available with the 2.2 diesel engine, personally (others will not agree)

I would rather spend the money on a newer or lower mileage Ford, the mondeo is a fine car for Ford money, the Jaguar is pretty much a Ford for Jag money.

I have to agree with you - the Jag is also more 'padded out' making the Mondeo slightly roomier (I have been in both and car verify this personally!)

You will get much more car for your money with the Ford - but it's the badge that you pay for!

Any of the mondeo's with the 2.2 will be more than adequate. The estates also have self-levelling suspension.

You can get auto box's with the Mondeo's but can be quite rare - try Ford direct I have the 2.2 Mondeo ST hatch which has a kerbweight of 1640kg so the estate will be a little heavier.

The jaguars don't have much room in the rear seats apparently if that is a requirement for you.

The Mondaneo is better built. X type has terrible build quality and lost of problems with Handbrake, locks, rattles and so on. If you want premium buy mercedes.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Sounds pretty conclusive that the old shape mondeo is the one to go for. Nice 07 plates available for

My dad has owned and towed with two X-Type Jags.

The first a 2.0D saloon and now a 2.2D Estate. Towing firstly a 2003 Bailey Senator Oaklahoma, then a 2006 Oaklahoma.

Both have towed well and been very reliable.

The 2.2D is a nice car to drive, very comfortable ride.

If you want a Mondeo buy one, if you want a Jag buy one. Suit yourself, it is your money at the end of the day.

There has been a lot of *ollocks written above!

The Jag has a modified Mondeo floorpan & shares the diesel engine's, gearbox & brakes with the Mondeo. The rest of the car is bespoke Jaguar. Anyone who has driven both (incl me) will tell you that the X-type is much better to drive than a Mondeo. The Jag also came 13th in a recent JD power customer satisfaction/reliability survey which made it the best non japanese car & miles in front of Merc & BMW or Ford for that matter.

Also, the price of a car is the difference between what it costs you to buy & what you get back when you sell. The Mondeo is a huge depreciator, & now that the new model is out it will be worth pence in a few years!

BTW the 2.2 diesel common to both the Jag & Mondeo is in fact a Peugeot unit & is also used in several Citroen models.

I agree with Glenn. I used the latest Mondeo for nearly a year as a company car, I put 38k on that car and it was fine.
However the driving difference with the jag is a magnitude above. The car itself is a nicer place to be and the roads genuinely get smoother.
I will recommend a couple of things. Avoid the V6 petrols, apparently they are very thirsty and seem to have a week engine (loads for sale withblowns units) which is a shame since jag didn't offer the AWD with diesel units, avoid built in sat nav if it fails it's really expensive to fix and you will have to fix it since it controls the climate control radio etc, get the 2.2 TD unit it is soooo much stronger, get one with cruise it wasn't standard and will help you shift it when you want to move on.
