Hello, please could someone give their opinion on the sedona as a tow car, i am considering buying 1, it will be on an 07 or 08 plate...we have had a sedona before and it was on a 52 plate, but we never towed with it.....thankyou for any information given....regards steve

Hi Steve,
I have had three sedonas and I found them to be totally reliable,my present one is an automatic,and for the price they are unbeatable as a towcar,they are ideal for towing heavy T/A without resorting to a 4x4.The tow limit is massive 2000kgs.The mpg is better with the manual box at 42mpg solo and 30 towing approx the auto is 32mpg solo and in the low 20,s towing,they do provide effortless towing,after saying all that though they are a heavy old bus and maybe not as nimble as a lightweight MPV such as a ford galaxy,type.it all depends on the weight of your van.

At the risk of upsetting a number of folk, my personal experience is that the Sedona is a much better tow car than the Sorento (both old and new), unless you really need 4X4 of course. They are much more stable.

Thankyou Allen and nigel, we have just got back from looking at a 2008 with 22,000 miles on it, and we are possibly going for that 1...our van is a large compass corona, weight 1455 , we did tow with a discovery, but got rid due to issues,( we currently use an a4 avant just to get about,) like i said we have had a sedona before( but never towed), and its been the best comfort wise, going twice to france, and would rather that than the discovery...we used to get about 23mpg with the disco, so very interested in the fuel consumption, thankyou both again,little bit more interested now, regards steve...

Had 55 Sedona now for 3 years and tows anything like a dream. Just back from europe, towed about 2500 miles uphill and downdale, Switzerland,Luxembourg,Germany and all points in between, averaged 29.6mpg overall, mostly towing 1750kg,(mostly HER shoes!!!)
Usually get about 36mpg when not towing, no problems at all in 3 years, only renewed two tyres. Go for it,you will not regret it, with the added bonus of the electric doors(only jealous)

Thankyou oldievanner, sounds like you had a good trip, thankyou for the input, im test driving it on tuesday, ( only to double check it really)...but it does look like we will be going for it....we have 2 dogs also, an old english sheepdog, and a bearded collie, so it will be better for them, more height than the disco for the big lad to stand up...just need a tow bar for it, thankyou again, regards steve

Whilst not owning a Sedona, one of our Royale club members does, and six of us use it for out & about when on site.Very comfortable and spacious for six and two wheelchairs, and surprisingly economical for its size. The only downside is the front wheel drive. It bogs down very easily, and I've had to tow him on and off site quite often.Other than that, a very good towcar.

I have an 07 Sedona 2.9 TD Auto. and have had this for 2years. It is a great towcar for my twin axle van. It has developed one problem however in that when towing up hill for long periods it drops to 2nd gear, as you would expect, but when the road levels out it stays in second gear and to get it out it is necessary to move the shift to N and then back to D. It then seems to be ok. This only happens very occasionally and when towing up steep inclines. I would be interested to know if anyone else has experienced this problem and is it a fault that can be rectified.

Thankyou emmerson and james, we are getting a manual so cant comment on the auto box, thankyou for your encouraging words though. what sort of tow bar do you get for the sedona, may sound like a stupid question, but is there a choice, (we had a choice with the disco and chose the detachable)...i dont need 1 for about 6 weeks so got time to shop around, but just wondered if there was a preference...thankyou all again its much appreciated, regards steve

I just have a normal non detachable type of towbar mainly because I like the comfort of knowing when not towing that I have protection at the back of the car in case anyone drives too close. Also when reversing upto a hard object say in a multistorey car park the towbar will tough a wall rather than the rear bumper!

We tow with a 56plate 2.9 TS auto and had the same problem with the gearbox and apparently so did quite a few other facelift Sedonas but only when towing.
Our dealer ,Ken Jervis of Stoke-on- Trent was excellent and we ended up testing modified gearbox e.c.u. software last year.
Apparently e.c.u. upgrades exacerbated the problem but the modified software for towing sorted it out.
The gearbox locks in second gear to protect from damage it senses will occur.
I would have a word with your dealer.
Our auto is a joy to tow with and manoeuvre on site .

Thanks for information I will certainly put this option to my dealer. I agree the Sedona and in particular the Auto is a great towcar.
