Have just completed a 2200 mile round trip to Slovenia with my 2.5 Sorento XT and Spectrum 418 I believe this was the most relaxing jouney we have ever achieved on the continent. The car performed impecablly even with temperatures in the mid 30's (lucky us!) Given the trip was mostly on autobahns and I kept my foot easy on the pedal the car returned 30mpg which even surprised me.

Having owned a TD5 a few years ago, my personal preference taking value for money into account would be the Sorento.

Had a TD5 and as much as my heart loves Landrovers my head and wallet would never let me have another, when on the rally field we always offer to follow LR owners off the field to give them a tow when they break down!! One or two have been lucky but most people I know get rid of any Landie as soon as the warranty is up. Our old 13 year old pajero was in better nick than the TD5 was at 4 years old. Would of changed for the 3.2 shogun last time but heard one to many reports of them breaking rather badly when towing, blowing up!! We have ended up with a 55 rexton tiptronic, more spacious than the sorento, much better towing especially on the motorway, quieter and because of the badge 7K. It has the merc 2.7 diessel and the merc 5spd tiptronic box. We tow a 6 berth coachman with ours and some friends are pulling a laser with theirs. I think there will be more of them sold when Kia downsizes the sorento later this year.

If you enjoy watching the world go by as you wait for the RECOVERY SERVICE to attend then go ahead and buy a Landrover product.

It does not take a clever person to realise that they are OVERATED, unreliable crap.

Yes i have had 2 just in case the first was a one of piece of " MERD" .

It wasn't, the second one matched it in spades for being a parcel of S***.

Shogun/Pajero/Landcruise everytime

Currently running a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Mercedes 3.0 Diesel. Guess what? It starts every time i turn the key and i am not on first name terms with the AA/RAC/Greenfag etc etc.

And then there's the other side to the story!

My father-in-law has a 2000 registered Discovery TD5 which he has had from new, and hasn't had a spot of bother with it.

Whilst I haven't owned the other vehicles mentioned, I have droven them during a National Towcar Awards event. I must say that the Sorento was a huge disappointment following all the hype from the Caravan Club. I commented upon this to one of the other judges, who remarked "it's like driving a blancmange isn't it?" I know what she meant. Apparently, following criticism of the choppy solo ride on early Sorento's, the suspension was altered (softened) when the vehicle had its face lift. That made a more compliant solo ride, but it was sloppy when towing compared to many other vehicles.

We also tested Shogun, Landcruiser(s), Jeeps, Hyundai, Ssang yong to mention but a few, all of which had their own issues for one reason or another.

The choice must be yours and what suits you. If you get a bad car of whatever make, (even a new one) you'll curse it. If you get a good one, you'll be singing its praises. There's far too much heresay and media hype spouted about all vehicles. Some of the cars mentioned above, based on my own experiences I wouldn't touch with a barge pole, but owners of them seem more than happy.

It's got to be your choice. Have a good drive of both before you do though.
