Sportage have good reputation as tow car, would be good match for 1300kg caravan. Only recommendation is go for AWD model.

Wet grass and front wheel drive aren't good combination especially if towing heavy caravan.

I’ve only been unable to exit wet CL s and on each occasion it was with three different four wheel drive cars and caravans in the range 1300-1400kg, not heavy. One being a serious off road car with all terrain tyres too. For years caravanners rarely had access to four wheel drive cars and yet managed. If the van has a mover then that can be a useful aid to exiting a wet or muddy pitch when the car is unable to tow the caravan off.

You have to lock the AWD , otherwise the system doesn't lock in until the front wheels spin.
And you need a chunky tread pattern. Hankooks k117 or Avon. As7 or AX7.

I've just spent few nights on wet grass site, Vitara with road tires had no problems towing 1100kg caravan. Ground was level. Friends fwd campervan struggled, a FWD towing caravan wouldn't have had hope show.
Even with AWD still have to be sensible where you camp. Given its winter wouldn't put AWD to test on site that involves pulling van up wet grass slope.
I always place it in snow mode as auto will only engage rear ones front slips. By then front wheels have ripped the grass and are trying to start on mud.

Morning! Thank you all for your advice. I’ve decided to look into purchasing a Tiguan se 2 litre tai diesel manual 2017 150bps 2wd . Would this car be more suitable for towing a swift 1294 kg caravan ?? Thanks in advance 😀

Tiguan would be eminently suitable. You could see your match on “Towcar.info” and compare to the Kia Sportage.
Thank you, silly question 🙈 I’ve just noticed my caravan has
Mass In Running Order Unladen (KG) – 1294
- Maximum Technical Permissible Laden Mass (KG) – 1500 which one is the over all kerb weight please? I’ve been going by 1294 kg is this correct 😊

No the important one is MTPLM of 1500kg. Kerbweight relates to the tow car not caravan.

Our rental car to come back from Devon is a Tiguan. Once going it is comfortable to drive, but the steering felt too sensitive however that could be because I am used to the Jeep. Very nippy though and very sharp brakes .

There is no lock on the AWD hybrid, it's permanently in AWD with five percent to the front axle at all times.

Weight wise my 190pps Tiguan AWD DSG was 1755kg with a spare space saver, and factory fit towbar.

GTS Sportage hybrid 230ps AWD automatic is 1715kg with no spare or towbar.

Thanks for all the advice. I’ve narrowed my search down to a Tiguan tdi 4Motion diesel automatic its comes up as a good match for 1500kg caravan on the matching site tow car. Looking at some dealership websites they put minimum kerb weight and max towing weight. When applying the 85% to the minimal kerb weight the car isn’t suitable to tow a 1500kg caravan. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ☺️

We had a Tiguan petrol rental over the weekend. It was a very nice comfortable car to drive and we were seriously impressed, but it is over complicated when it comes to the info centre. Took me ages to work out how to use the CC. :ROFLMAO:

Gave up on the reverse camera as not a normal reverse camera like on other cars as it only indicated a proximity warning and you cannot actually see anything behind you.

Having had VWs in the past, I have never even considered them again however now I may re-consider a Tiguan perhaps sometime in the future, but it will probably be petrol? Emission controls on diesels give too many hassles!

85% is a guide for inexperienced towers and since its inception is lost in time. Since then car technology has come on apace with suspension and safety aids. You are very frugal with your information. What is the cars kerbweight or Mass. in Service?

There’s more to caravan stability than the ratio of kerbweight to MTPLM. Things such as load distribution, Car loading. Noseweight. Driver performance, riad snd weather conditions etc all contribute to safe towing. But the general principle of keeping van light and car heavy hold good for all outfits.

I’ve found Towcar.info very good. It spotted shortcomings in my Forester that I knew of anyway. Beachball is an experienced caravanner who had a Tiguan diesel. He will probables his experience to the thread.

Funny camera then if it doesn’t show anything. Was it mucky!?

Yes very strange as most car reversing cameras just come on when you select reverse, are you sure the car had a camera. ??
Possible. When you selected reverse the parking sensors activated to warn you of any impending collision and the car automatically braked. You could not actually see what was behind you.

The corolla does not have a reverse camera, but because it is "low" you can easily see out the back. With a rental where you would need to pay for any damage, you really miss the camera especially in car parks where most drivers seem blind to cars reversing out!

Hi, the details on the dealers website say
  • Max. Towing Weight - Braked (kg)2200
  • Max. Towing Weight - Unbraked (kg)750
  • Minimum Kerbweight (kg)1598. When I put the car and caravan details through the matching site it comes up as - please see pics which I've attached below. Thanks again for the advice it’s appreciated. We’re new to towing and want to get it right ☺️
