Hi, We are intending to buy a caravan for the first time, looked like it would be the Challenger 570, but then along came the Pegasus. Having virtually decided on the 570, we then looked at various cars suitable to tow 1595kg MTPLM. At the moment we are thinking of a new Kia Titan 4WD, but I have seen no mention of it in any of the forums I have read. Can anyone give me any help or information on this possibility, particularly if your have one yourself.

If we go with the Pegasus, then the lower MTPLM of 1482 may open other alternatives for us, comments please.

Hi George

We have just purchases a Kia Sportage 2Ltr 4WD on 58 plate(but not the titan). Following extensive research forums speaking to others who drive them whilst out with van, (often find people happy to pass on advise). Up until now we have been towing with a Vectra, which has not been a problem but it is getting on in years and beginning to have a few niggles that coupled with my husband having severe back problems (even getting in and out of the Vectra is now difficult) we plumbed for the Sportage. This forum, has some older posts on the Sportage's so would suggest you do a search (or as mods to point you in best direction), also it did well in tow car test's last year (not tested this year). We pick ours up on Wednesday so will take van out for trip over next weekend to see how they go together but am confident they will be a good match, we have Pageant Sancerre not quite as heavy as Pegasus as MTPLM is 1435Kg.

Hope this helps, we were also impressed on how the Sportage handled solo on test drives etc.,

Di

Hi George

Quick update, got Sportage, had 10 days had slight bip, corrected by Garage and Kia Rescue brilliant, on way back home from Cornwall towmorrow, car performed brilliantly, no problems what so ever, towed very easily, very enjoable ride, did rough calculation on fuel consumption average 38 MPG, half of which was towing so can't complain on that score either.

Hope you had a good break

Happy Caravaning

Di

Hello Di,

I can confirm that we had a great holiday thanks. I read your post about the problem you had, and the response from Kia, which appears to have been first class. This has been supported by others, so it looks like no problems on that score. I think that in my mind I am committed to the Kia Titan, however having visited our local dealer on Sunday to view the Pegasus, I am more confused than ever on which van to buy. There is no doubt that the construction of the 'box' on the Pegasus is brilliant and one thinks that the others will have to follow, however the internal fitments did not match it. We both much preferred the Chalenger 570 internally, and lets face it this is where you spend a lot of time. Do we now wait for Swift/Elddis to catch up or for Baily to offer quality fitments to match the innovative technology they have introduced?

I have decided to sit on it for a month or so, have a further visit to the dealers, then make our decision on the way to go. We do not need the van this year, so we can wait and see what happens, if the VAT rises then we will have to accept it.

Thanks and regards,

George

I have written to both Baileys and Swift

Hi george

I used to have a Kia Sportage Diesel a couple of years ago and I pulled a Geist Aktiv 495 which is a heavier type of caravan (german built). It towed great and again although it was near to the weight limits I didn't feel the caravan behind me.

Hope this info helps with your decision.

Hello Di and all who have replied to me earlier, on my original posting, on this topic. I thought it was about time to update you all on our situation. We have purchased yesterday a new Kia Sportage Titan model and expect to take delivery early next year. We had an extended test drive and I was extremely pleased with how the car drove, particulary on the road from Buckingham to Brackley, which is narrow, bendy and bumpy. My wife Mary was also happy with her drive and I am confident we have purchased the best car for the job, within our budget. I have to say I cannot see that the more expensive options could offer any more.

The reason we were able to finally order the car, was that we had already confirmed an order for the Challenger 570. Having been confused by the arrival of the Pegasus, once we had a look at it, our decision became fairly easy. Despite the new construction method, neither of us felt that Bailey had got it correct from the internal aspect, and lets face it, this is where you spend the time. Unfortunately the delivery of the van is not until May 2010, so I cannot make any comment from the towing point of view, but I will update you sometime next year, from June onwards.

I have had my Sportage from new for a couple of years now and i too have to say it tows brilliantly. However apart from that its been trouble all the way!!!

Suspension bushes have been done twice in less than 16000 miles and every time it gets cold it suffers from heavy condensation inside even to the point of it being thick in ice in winter.I have taken it back to the dealer maybe 15 or 20 times, and today they tell me finally that there is nothing more they can do and that Kia say it is a feature of all Sportages!!!!

Hello Chris, Thanks for your comments about towing, I am sure it will do an excellent job, although I say that with no experience. On the other points, I can only wait and see how we go on, your comment are the first that I have seen offering criticism of the model. I have to say I was very happy with the quality of the car, it seemed well built.

Regards,

Bedford George

HI Chris i get a bit condensation also but to get rid of it i either put the air con on or just open a rear window about an inch then it gets rid of it no bother (had a Mondeo just the same ) what the cause is that the air inside is hotter than the outside temp on the glass so just adjust the temp to suite then it does,nt steam up . try it see what happens

hope this helps

cheers Duggie
