Land Rover Discovery 3 13 pin socket.

I have been looking at the LR Discovery 3 lately. I see the towing sockets are fitted behind a removable panel. I have however seen one with a 13 pin socket on a separate bracket which looks very untidy. Does anyone know if the 13 pin socket can be fitted behind the panel?

Cheers

David

Yes it can, no problem. I've noticed some sockets fitted on the outside too. I can only assume owners don't want to have to remove the panel each time, it can be quite fiddly. Must admit my electrics cover lives in the boot a lot of the time. Nigel

Thanks Nigel,

You have put my mind at rest. I think the OH and I are almost convinced that is the towcar for us. We have been umming and ahhing between the Discovery and the Nissan Pathfinder. I feel the LR will hold its value better.

Just to confirm landroverman's reply, the 13-pin socket will fit. I changed mine from the 7-pin system to the 13. The only issue that I had was that it had to be fitted at a 90 degree angle (cover opens sideways) to allow the plug to fit in and twist.

Nigel.

I have a D4 with 13 pin socket, this is the same tow bar as the D3, had no issues with the socket, mine is mounted in the normal orientation. the D3 electrics are plug and play and do not need to be activated by a dealer, you can ask them to activate the electrics and all it does is disable the rear parking sensors when the caravan is plugged in, it also stops the suspension changing hieght automatically when one of the special programs are selected.

Mine was a genuine LR kit too (all working beforehand due to the 7 pin set up being activated). Memory jogged - There was a spacer missing from the original kit which was later sent to me, but because I needed the car the only way the new plug would clear the chassis member/bumper was to mount it at the 90 degrees. Everything works fine, so I can't be bothered dismantling the socket to fit the spacer.
