Landrover freelander 2.0 Auto any good for towing?

Our caravan is 1150MIRO 1350MTLPM, what stands out in this vehicle compared with Xtrail and CRV is the choice of the Automatic gearbox (I currently have a Vectra Auto courtesy car and loving driving the Auto)

But how will it be towing compared with manual, and is the nose weight, or pulling weight likely to differ as we have seen for example with other cars?

I can't speak for the towing exerience with an automatic Freelander although lots of people prefer automatics for towing.

Are you buying new or used? With comments like this on the Honest John Car by Car Breakdown, I'd want to make sure I had a good warranty -

"Now reports of failures of Jatco 'Steptronic' [Freelander] autoboxes after 45k miles and 3 years. Spares and knowledge of the box hard to find in UK so usually means a new box at 4.5k."

hi, what year is the freelander you are looking at? i had a 55 reg with the auto steptronic box ,never had any problems with it ,its great to have the auto box and the steptronic was great you can use the 5 manual gears without having a clutch so you have the ease of the auto and the use of manual gears if you want or need to use them, i think the nose weight of the freelander is 100kg ,we had a twin axle coachman on the back it was steady as a rock, put landrover forums in a google search there are plenty of helpful and intresting sites to browse through,

Hi it was a 2 year old diesel we looked at, the spec was HSE.

Well our experience with towing our caravan with a Peugeot 406 auto 2.0 resulted in the gearbox melting whilst travelling from Spain to Portugal. It cost us

hi ,are you looking to buy from a main dealer? hse is top spec , i had an se spec and was very pleased with it the only downside to the freelander is boot space its not that big but then it depends what you are going to put in it, i have driven landrovers for over ten years now from defenders,discos and freelanders its true that there are some bad ones out there and when there bad there really bad ,i have only ever bought from a main dealer if its a used vehicle you get 12 months warranty ,mot and landrover assistance which includes european cover,hope this helps

Yes it was a main dealer today that we visited in Basingstoke, I guess we will pay a premium for the car but at the moment for all the vehicles we have only looked at main dealers. We did notice the boot was smaller than Xtrail & CRV, I do need to fit a drum kit (at the moment the bass goes on the back seat) I am hoping to get this in the boot, so need to do some measuring!
