We stayed at this site for a week in 2001. The weather was perfect for the whole week - hot, sunny, gentle sea breeze etc.

The pitches are a reasonable size, set amongst mature pine trees. You can use gas bbqs anywhere, but charcoal only in the communal bbqs. The facilities are not ultra modern, but they are clean and functional. Some of the toilets are "squat" type, which we like! The pool is open from 1000-1200 and then 1400 to 1800. A bit strange, but it works. There are three separate pools in a single complex, but no waterslides etc. A lifeguard is on duty at all times.

The site is literally just off the coast road, with a nice sandy beach 10 minutes' walk away. The coastal cycle path passes the site, and if you're feeling fit you can ride for miles in either direction. There is a small shop, and a pizza bar on the site. The local supermarket is nearby. The site is in the middle of a very busy tourist area (think Newquay) and there was noise from a neighbouring site (disco etc) only on the Saturday night - and it stopped around midnight.

On the final morning we left at 0800 to travel to Brittany, knowing that the gate opens at 0800. We were surprised to see night security guards packing up from their post at the gate; we had not realised that we were being protected in this way - very reassuring.

OK, I avoid giving advice on where to stay but I know St Palais quite well. The site is OK but positioned where the built up outskirts of Royan starts with some busy roads. Between St Palais and La Palmyre you have miles of golden beach and the Bon Anse, a penisular protecting the La Palmyre Harbour and a good distance of beach from the Cote Sauvage waters.

To my mind there are better sittuated sites around La Palmyre at the same sort of cost with better more spectacular pools for the family.

La Palmyre has a very good famous zoo worth visiting and a good less frantic centre to wander at night or take kids to crazy golf or whatever and between the town along the avenues to the beach there is a huge Market on Sunday mornings and the Ice cream parlour just around the corner from Palmyr Wind Surf shop is to die for!

Again there are sites that border the coastal path and I would advise that cycles are a must for the family. The Bon Anse beach within the peninsula is not for swimming so you take the path to the main beach, or you brave the Cote Sauvage and a climb of the light house is worth while.

It's a busy popular Area and the four star sites can get good and bad reports, a La Palmyre base would be my area choice rather than St Palais-sur-mer, the road does get busy with the zoo and so does the road to Royan through St Palais.

We stayed at this site a few years ago, thought it was lovely, quite quiet and very 'French'. A few statac vans all positioned away from the camping area and lovely landscaped pretty site. Facilities were dated then (but very clean)but that was part of the charm of the site. Security barrier and guards. A short walk to small town.

Plotter, I've decided to come out of lurking mode.

We stayed at this site last year and for the first time abroad in the van, I thought the site was well laid out and as we pre-booked, we were given a large pitch to accomodate the T/A caravan. Previous posts mentioned quiet pool complex, but I prefer these and the beach was close enough for the kids to go body boarding. Toilets/shower block cleaned around 3 times a day and bar/take away, well priced and convenient. Surrounding area pleasant and would return again. Been around this area and Vendee for last 8yrs, so off to Spain for a change of scenery. Your going to have your own opinion like everyone else, but I would recommend it to anyone,

best regards, Martin
