The M4 will be closed in both directions between junctions 18 (Bath) to 19 (Bristol M32) from 7 pm on Friday 24 October until 6am Monday 27 October. It is the final stage of a new bridge being installed.

Happy travels ☹️

They open one road for you, only to close another. ☹️. Hope there is a sensible alternative route that is not full of motorway traffic.

I can see tailgates all the way back to Swindon or Newport depending which way you are travelling.

Nice to dream. 😂

This is the last of the full closures caused by replacement of the worn out bridge. The last ones did cause major problems but the work did all complete on time for the M 4 to reopen on the Monday morning.

I think the diversion is via A46 to Pennsylvania then right at the roundabout towards Bristol then Ring Road to M32 and M4, if going West and reverse if going East, worst part is the single carraiageway through Warmley otherwise straightforward depending on volune of traffic.

Thanks for the info. I will be needing to use the M5 north and south of the M4 around that time. But will definitely avoid those dates now in case the M5 is affected.

......sat stationary on that stretch of the M4 for an hour in August due to a vehicle fire.
You often can't win!
Maybe we have!
Passing that way the following weekend (November 1st) on our way with the caravan to Bridgwater/Burnham carnivals.

The previous time the M4 was closed for this bridge work the holds ups did affect the Almondsbury junction of M4 and M5 carriageways.

Thanks Mel.
No problem . Back to the old A40 and A419. Just a more demanding tug, twisty and hilly but 10 miles shorter. We will cope👍

I’ve suffered some extra long detours in Scotland when a trunk road has been closed. Large blocks of mountains don’t provide easy detours.
Who remembers the times the Ballachullish Ferry broke, before the bridge opened. A mother of a detour around the Loch!

But still got the Air Balloon problem. Possibly go through Stroud. You can wave as you pass by.

John
Birdlip to the old Air Ballon was fine two weeks ago. Same old hill but with the speed restriction, it makes no difference to me towing. If shut then yesterday I’d take the Stroud through to Cirencester.

We went up to the A419 via Air Ballon, not towing, but the traffic kept moving albeit slower than normal. Where filtering was required drivers seemed quite patient. What struck me was the sheer scale of the road building construction works from Air Ballon towards Cirencester direction. Awsome how the topography of the land had been changed.
