Does anyone know WHY there is a statue of Mandela in the square ?

p.s. to DARCE: I have no problem with you tactfully suggesting I do a bit more reading BUT the point of my question was to save me doing so ...... I though that perhaps someone here would know.

The info you give in YOUR reply does not show a good reason to have a statue erected.
 
This is the reason for the statue being put up:

"The prominent position of the nine foot bronze statue, facing the Houses of Parliament, honours Nelson Mandela as one of the greatest fighters for freedom in the 20th century. It is also a permanent statement of London's abhorrence of apartheid and every other form of racism."
