Hi, I am thinking of purchasng an ML 270 CDI 2002 and wonder if anyone has any experience of this vehicle as a tow tug and passenger vehicle
Our problems with the park brake is that we used the left foot for the clutch, so had to select neutral to allow us to take that foot off the pedal to apply park brake. Not an issue with an auto but a real problem for us with the manual as I said.Hi Ian,
I bought a 23 month old ML270CDI auto in June last year, we towed a 1400kg single axle van over 1000 miles last year and since November 2007 we have towed a 1700kg Twin axle for nearly 3000 miles so far with no problems at all, although I load the caravan carefully it has never snaked in the slightest on this car and will hold 60mph on cruise control with ease.
I bought mine from a Merc dealer and had 4 new tyres and a detatchable towbar fitted in the deal and since I have converted to 13 pin electrics as the plug is easy to hide behind the removable panel, and with the bar removed it is completely undetectable, the towbar is a Westfalia which is excellent.
The power output quoted above is incorrect, in the ML it is 163 bhp which is ok when you compare to a new 3.2 Shogun at 158 or 168 bhp for the auto, mine is chipped to a claimed 200bhp which makes it a lot more lively and it still returns 20mpg towing at a true 60mph with a total weight of 4.5 tons. Some people are against chipping and have had bad experiences which is fair enough but a lot more are happy with them as I am.
I can't understand the issue with the park brake, you use your left foot to apply and your right hand to release- simple enough.
On the whole I would recommend the ML, it is the most stable towcar I have ever used and has been 100% reliable, the only bad point is the fuel consumption but this is typical of all large 4x4s.
