ANYONE WITH SIMILAR PROBLEM TO THIS. AUTO BOX FAILED WHILE TOWING STERLING 620. REPAIRS COST £2500 BUT CAR WAS UNDER EXTENTED WARRANTY SO HAD TO PAY ONLY EXCESS. NOW AFRAID TO TOW IN CASE SIMILAR PROBLEM HAPPENS. JUST BAD LUCK? DO I NEED EXTRA OIL COOLER FITTED OR DITCH THE CAR FOR SOMETHING ELSE.

t model Mercedes are we looking at? is a ML or C class and what is the kerbweight of it, as I suspect that van is rather heavy for your vehicle. I have towed extensivly with the C 220 and E280 without trouble, an oil cooler is standard so that wont be an issue.

Plenty of Merc Auto's tow and go far futher with no problems, you've probably been unlucky.

If you want peace of mind can I suggest that you call Kenlowe on 01628 823303 and get some advice from their techies and ask their advice as to any benefits of fitting an extra cooler to your model. Or lay out your questions and concerns in an email to sales@kenlowe.com

i have posted regarding this before.

what mileage is on your ml? upwards of 60k?

mb claim that the gearbox is filled for life, they do not say who's life.

those in the know recommend that the autobox fluid is changed every 50-60k mls & mb fluid specific to the gearbox type must be used. if its not done the gearbox will overheat and self destruct.

the first sign that the fluid is spent is rising engine temp when towing, followed by the gearbox locking into emergency mode (either 2nd or 4th gear depending on road speed). if these warnings are not heeded your gearbox will go bang soon after.

the ml 270 is rated at 3365kgs max tow so i doubt it has been stressed towing your sterling.

get onto benzworld and you'll find plenty of info regarding gearboxes.
