Hi,

We towed an Eriba (Hymer) Triton (MTPLM 1200 kg) with the previous generation C270 CDI Avantgarde automatic for four years.

The 5 cylinder C270 engine produced just a few more bhp and a bit more torque than the current specification C220 170 bhp - and whilst the ratio was slightly better than the 90% ratio of your combination - our experiences both solo and towing were all positive.

And a year or so back, replaced the C with an E-320 CDI, which excels at the same job.

If you are going to buy a C-class, I assume it will be an automatic? The manual is fine, but see if you can live with the parking-brake (which is a non-issue with the automatic)

Regards, Robert

Go for it!

It's a wonderful car and marvelous tug!

I tow my Ace Ambassador with a Mercedese C220 CDI estate automatic and wouldn't change it for the world. The car is a 2002 model with 100k miles under its belt. Two weeks in France last year it returned 30mpg towing and 48mpg solo. Going again next friday.

I had a 220 cdi one of the last before the facelift in 2000. It developed 125 BHP, much less than later versions but towed my Hymer Nova 470 weighing 1500kg no trouble at all. The weight ratio was around 93%. Over 22k miles actually towing I got 25mpg

No reliability problems either

Hope this helps

Dave
