Mercedes E Class 320 Estate

I've seen a lot of Merc 320's towing enormous caravans. It's maximum permissible towload is 2100kg, so that explains. Therefore, the short answer is, yes.

Thanks very much for that very helpful, by the way would you know if the self leveling really works sufficiently to tow a twin axle caravan totally level? Cheers.

I'm afraid I can't give you a definitive answer as I haven't got a Merc. Maybe Rob_jax can as he has one. But it would defeat the object a bit if self-levelling suspension were unable to cope with 100kg noseweight.

Having said that, the suspension of a twin axle should handle a a caravan that is not standing absolutely level. A deviation of 1

Hi Mark,

I've answered some of your questions on your other posting, but I can't help with your self levelling question - we have the saloon with standard suspension - and tow a German designed single axle caravan.

Currently Mercedes UK are offering free E-class upgrades on engine and trim - buy the Elegance and get delivery of the Avantgarde, and buy the E280 and receive the E320 type deals.

Just be careful that you don't get a free upgrade to the Sport, which isn't type approved to use a tow-bar.

Our Avantgarde is lowered by 15 mm at the factory (the Sport rather more) and this doesn't affect us - rather I believe the slightly lower, slightly stiffer car suspension makes an improvement to stability whilst towing.

Ah - forgot to say we have self levelling suspension on the new car but haven't had a chance to try it out yet - first try towing is 600 miles down to Bedford area next week, should be a reasonable test. We also have the Merc fold away towbar (released by a lever in the boot) great bit of kit.

I have an E280 cdi Estate that has the same engine but tuned down a bit from the 320 version. It is just great I have been to Spain with it towing a Hymer Nova at 1500kg and got 26mpg. I would recomend you think about getting the factory fitted towbar. It looks pricey but by the time I had bought the westfalia detachable bar and bespoke wiring, fitted at home by a mobile specialist it would have been cheaper to get the former. Additionally to activate the Trailor Stability program and other features required a trip to the MB dealer and another

David " Also have you considered factory collection, I cant think of a trip I enjoyed more and the factory tour was blilliant".

Especially if it's to Tuscaloosa !!!!!!!!

I'd rather go to Germany! I can confirm that the factory tour is excellent. It was fascinating watching the robots fitting dashboards, windscreens etc. The factory at Sindelfingen is spotless with driverless vehicles following an induction loop system in the floor and delivering parts to the robots as required. Well worth a visit.
