Does anyone know if the 2006 onwards MB 280cdi/320Cdi still have the auto box oil cooler set within the main engine cooling system, as earlier versions suffered from engine pressurised cooolant leaking into the auto box and a very expensive repair. Also does the E-class need any extra auto box cooling in order for it to tow? I think the 280/320 are rated at 2000kgs but is the car raedy to do this without additional cooling mods such as the BMW X5 requires?

Cheers

Sorry, can't answer your question about the Merc's but the X5's don't need any extra cooling mods for the auto box as far as I am aware.

Graeme is correct ref the X5 if it has a factory fitted towbar or dealer fitted one,if its a non dealer fitted towbar the extra cooling is required,i believe there was a report in Practical caravan or the CC mag where they quoted 2k for a towbar because they need to uprate the cooling of the normal car.

Not sure on the E class but i know the ML 320 has a gearbox cooler

Hi Clive

I have a 07 E280 CDI Estate and as far as I am aware it has an additional external cooler already for the transmission. I have towed 1600KG a total of 16500 miles so far without any difficulty. One sugestion I would make if you are buying new is to have the factory fitted towbar. I didnt, and on realising that I needed a detachable bar to avoid interfering with the reversing sensors it ended up costing as much.

David,

thanks, I know that in 2006 MB made a large number of mods to the E series mainly to address problems that seemed to be giving them a bad name. Most reports show the post 2006-09 models to be very good. It makes sense to take the auto cooler away from the engine coolant system. What sort mpg do you get? I am thinking of using it instead of my Sorento auto which turns in 30-32mpg solo and 22-24mpg towing 1400kg.

Hi clive

I dont think you will improve much on the Sorento figures you are getting. I log all the fuel and calculate it from that and 25mpg towing is a good day. I rarely use the car wholly Solo but have yet to see much above 34mpg. I changed to this from an earlier Sorento that was only doing 20mpg. What it does have though is enormous carrying capacity with the seats down and it is a lovely car. If you do buy new go to Stuttart to collect it its a super experiance.

When i changed my ML270 for an E220cdi auto earlier this year i specifically asked the question about transmission oil cooler and was told by the Service Manager (but unfortunately not in writing) that there is a gearbox cooler and than none other is required. I have also looked at a 3 year old 320 cdi auto and this has the same cooler with an extra run. They are right at the front of the car and may or may not have external fins.
