Not sure what the kerb weight of the new model Mondeo cars is but we have an 06 model with which we tow a Swift Coastline 540 (Charisma 555)which has a MTPLM of 1472KG. The unit travels well together but would have thought that at 1800KG MTPLM the 625 is too heavy for the new range 2.0 TDCI.Do a comparison on Towsafe or one odf the other vehicle matching websites.

Colin,

I really don't think a Ford Mondeo would be a good towcar for a caravan as large as yours! The MTPLM will definitely exceed the kerbweight and it would not be safe. This will be confirmed by towsafe, or the free www.whattowcar.com site.

Remember that the battery, gas bottles and the motor mover (if fitted) all have to come out of the payload, so the caravan may be heavier than you think.....

The stuff for four people can also weigh quite a bit.

Either way, I feel a Mondeo is too light for a large t/a van.

Hi colin,

I tow with a 07 mondeo 2.0tdci ghia 140ps,with a kerb weight of 1571kg,Max tow weight for the mondeo is 1800kg,although i would never tow up to that weight

I tow a swift challenger 460se with a MPTLM of 1284,I know this is a reasonable differance in weight, but having said that I have seen mondeo's pulling simular vans to yours.

Performance wise I can't fault the mondeo towing arround 28/30 & solo arround 45/48 depending on how you drive,I also find that the mondeo is very comfortable & has plenty of cabin space & a rather large boot.

I would check fords web site/technical info & get the weights & diamentions for your chosen car.

To get to the 85% rule I use a little sum (85% rule is only a guide)

MPTLM of van divided by kerb weight times 100 = ????

for example mine is 1284/1571x100=81.73%

Remember if you have a motermover etc this weight can be taken from your user pay load.

All in all I think that your van is far too heavy for your chosen car.

Sorry Colin, I saw the username rather than the sign off first.

Hi Chris

I am new to the forum and i have just seen your comment, and i wonder if you can help me.I have an 07 Mondeo 130ps ghia estate and last year i towed a Bailey Burgundy with an MTPLM if 1450 as far as i know the van was loaded correctly, but i still felt the car was to light for the van it seemed to be a bit skittish. The van was equipped with the Al-ko ATC.

I am now upgrading to a Pegasus with a MTPLM of 1485 and thinking of buying a Kia Sportage. Do you think I should change to the Sportage or stick with the Mondeo. Do you have any problems with your Mondeo even when you must be near 920/0 to 940/0.
