Mondeo kerbweights ?

Can someone tell me the definitive kerbweight for the Mondeo ST TDCi hatch as I have heard a number of differing weights.I read somewhere that one was weighed in at 1670kg.

I am thinking about updating my caravan from a Coachman Amara 500/5 to the 560/6 which weighs a bit more so could do with knowing the weights.

Thanks

Jon

Hi Jon,

Basically no - as each car could have been built to a different specification (wheel or tyre upgrade, cloth / leather seating, airco options, tow-bar, HiFi system, airbag options, etc.) let alone manufacturing tolerances, there is no "official" kerb-weight that applies to all possible variants - factory fitted options can affect the kerb-weight by 100 to 150 kg.

If you really want to know the kerb-weight of your car to a tolerance of better than 20 kg, I'm afraid it's a trip to the public weigh-bridge.

The data printed in your car handbook or on the various web-sites is at best a guess, representing one particular variant that may be very different from your model

Jonathan, My 05 plate 2.2st Tdci Hatch weighed at the weighbridge at 1540kg. (No driver and very little fuel) Add to this 75kg for driver (Give or take a few kg's!!) and approx 50kg for fuel will give a kerbweight of around 1665kg. I've been towing 1350kg for 2yrs with no problems at all and am about to move to 1550kg t/a. What weight will you be towing?

Hello Jonathon,

The kerbweight is not really relevant unless you passed your test after Jan 1997. Only then is kerbweight important as you are restricted to a trailer of no more than the kerbweight of the car, or the cars maximum permitted trailer mass - which ever is less.

For those who passed the test before Jan 97, you are technically permitted to tow a trailer up to the maximum permitted by the specification of the car, subject to gross train weights and axle loadings.

If your concern is to keep below the magic 85% ratio (Car kerbweight : Caravan MPTLM) then whilst it is advisable, it is not essential provided you take appropriate care.

Thanks for all your replies. My current Coachman is 1200 MIRO and the model I am looking at is 1368Kg MIRO.Based on that I should be OK to tow with my Mondeo ST.It is pretty standard apart from the towbar and leather seats.

I'm sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news, but check with Ford, as I'm sure they do not advise you to tow with an ST. Possibly due to the lowered suspension
