Mont Blanc Tunnel. Any Problems?

I am Looking at using the Mont Blanc Tunnel at the end of July /start of August 08. Has anyone had any problems or got any reccomendations

We went through the MBT from Aosta to Chamonix in June 2004, and found it a smooth and very impressive experience. The tunnel is huge, with loads of room; very well lit; large "cavern" areas to prevent any possible claustrophobia; CCTV traffic monitoring and limits on speed and distance between vehicles. I can't recall the cost for our car and van now, but I didn't feel it to be extravagant. Was there anything in particular worrying you?

Regards

Graham

No worry's Graham , Im just getting my route together for when I go to Italy this coming summer.Still cant decide though! either we will be through france then via MBT or going France Germany Switzerland then gothard tunnel into italy. I think I will toss a coin nearer the time.

Hi Ian and Graham

I was interested to hear about the Mount Blanc T. Is it bigger than the St Gotthard T. I've been that way a couple of times and found it rather claustrophobic - that's probably just me - one of the few things I don't like driving in Italy and Switzerland are the tunnels. Other people don't seem to mind the St Gotthard Tunnel too bad and I suppose I have now done it once each way. I just put some comforting music on the CD player, say a prayer and go for it. I, also, reset the trip mileometer at the tunnel mouth and count off the miles as I go.

How long is MBT by the way?

By the way Ian St Gotthard Pass is a reasonable route. I went that way towing the first time I went to Italy as a puncture enroute meant that we arrived at the tunnel at teatime on a late-July, Friday evening when there were long queues for the tunnel. The pass is reasonable, not-too-steep hairpins on the way up and down with a flattish part in the middle.

Regards

Tim
