The very first think I look at if I get any half sus email is the address it came from. Some are very bizarre but more importantly are clearly not from the company the poster claims to be!

JC’s comment about “ must reply today” was just an extract from the scam post he’d received. Doesn’t mean he has any intention of replying to the scam.

If you reply then they know the email address is active. The harvest email addresses and sell the email address onto other scammers.

If the email is delivered and not opened nor replied to it's known to be valid.

Many email addresses are gathered from on line sites that have been hacked.

True, but more than likely you will not know it is a scam message until you open the email?

I can usually tell by who sent it and what the subject is.

This morning I got a spam email about re-registering my Domain Name. Since I know who I do that with and know they don't send emails from an odd address and odd subject content like Urgent it went straight in the bin.

Just look at the odd email address in the OP's post.

I am really sorry, but I simply cannot understand why anyone would get taken in by this kind of thing!

It is SO obviously a ridiculous “spam” to not even consider reading it, let alone posting it. Sorry. 🤷

But people do. It may sound a bit elitist but we've placed complicated technology into the hands of people who have no idea what they're doing at times. Someone, somewhere will fall foul of these sorts of things otherwise the 'black hats' wouldn't keep trying it on.

Just look at the latest cyber attacks at M&S, Co-op and Harrods. All thought to have been the result of a phishing attack via email or direct calls to support staff who were taken in by the scam.

Crypto scams abound because of the promise of big returns and people sign up.

Years back when my Aunt was alive and prior to the internet, she would get letters asking for money to be sent to someone she didn't know but was promising a lot in return. Despite family efforts she would still send off money saying that we'd be sorry we'd tried to stop her when she'd get a lot of dosh back.

What's that saying.... 'There's one born every minute......'

Just had a message on my mobile phone, ref a parking fine for 15th July, to be paid by 30th July.
The link take you to a very professional looking GOV site. It asks for Car reg and post code.
But it then asks for £20 .
I went to the same site again but through my tablet, but I put in a Hampshire post code. It came back with same fine and reference.
I then went to my Local council and entered my details, No fine notice found.
Reported this to SPAM on 7726.
And checked the number +447988341288, which is on the Hutchinson 3g network, and reported to " Who called Me"

Just had the same message on my iphone as you Hutch. I simply deleted it but have now had 3 further messages with short expletives apparently from the same sender. Disturbing abuse on and of my phone!
