An interesting debate, although some wander off the main point, I just hope caravan users don't want support when our government bring in the road tax for caravans that is being muted in places.

That has been scrapped by the government as not economically viable.

That’s been debated on and off for years now along with MoTs for caravans. The bureaucracy required to introduce such a scheme would most likely outweigh the benefits as caravans here are not registered. Anyway caravanners pay extra to use the roads by their increased fuel consumption and the duties and taxes that go with it. Paying by the mile eh?

The thing is that we already pay higher taxes when towing as there's substantial duty on the extra fuel we use.
 
Caravans being made to pay VED?

Or more likely motorhome VED is brought inline with domestic vehicle VED, rather than the commercial vehicle rate, as they are no longer used as one 😉

Virtually impossible to police. Would probably cost more to administer than income achieved
 
Not really sure - just that my daughter who lives their had a caravan. They have seperate reg numbers to the car as well.
 
Exporting used U.K. caravans to New Zealand is a niche lucrative business. A chap I know specialises in TAs. Mine is on his “buy” list ! He uses the same AWS as me who gives each prospective unit the once over and a full report.
I understand most of the TAs exported sell for circa £25 k locally.

Yes it is a lucrative export business. Like most businesses that meet demands it also attracted unscrupulous individuals who were exporting caravans of dubious quality including water damaged due to flooding and of course damp.

She had a Bailey Pageant (I think) and it was 17 years old when the dreaded damp problems hit. Not economically viable for them to fix but a dealer bought it who said he could fix it up and still make some money.

Talking to the chap I know he has important contacts in NZ and basically is an integral part of a high class good quality business .Probably explains why they only source older but well looked after FSH units to the NZ dealers No damp trash sent from Wiltshire 😉I didn’t think the cheats would succeed. The cost of shipping and insurance is not cheap.

Do you know why the Kiwis don’t import from Oz?

In southern France we met a chap who exported two British caravans a year to New Zealand, and his other business venture was importing high quality Egyptian white cotton towels and linen into Britain. Had a cracking outfit and spent most of his time touring Europe with occasional visits to Britain to source caravans and Egypt for the cotton goods. Otherwise his business was carried out from his outfit.

As to why Kiwis don’t import from Oz this might be a clue:

We've been to NZ many times and been caravanning with the family and seen a fair number of OZ imports but how large that number is I don't know.

UK vans are usually much in evidence as are our motorhomes.

One year I saw a new version of our Xplore 304. Can't remember the exact price but I know we wouldn't have been able to afford it.

Same applies in the Netherlands, caravans are seperately registered and must have MOTs, as must trailers over a certain weight. But when we lived there no ved was applicable
