NE England

We are toying with the idea of visiting the NE in September - Northumberland, Handrian's Wall and so on. This is an area that neither of us has ever visited before and I'm looking for site recommendations please. We like quiet, with a decent amount of space and would want electric hook up. We don't have dogs or children!

Somewhere in the Rothbury/Powburn area might suit. Handy for Hadrians Wall, Holy Island, Cragside etc. Never stayed at either place but visited from Berwick and thought both places quiet and attractive. Keilder Water is scenic but has a reputation for being 'midgey'.

Not sure whether you are a Caravan Club member,but there are two sites which we have used and both are firm favourites with us.

Nunnykirk is an extremely quiet site.It has electric hook ups, but NO toilet facilities.It is a few miles from Rothbury where there are shops and a superb National Trust property which is a must to visit.

Approx.20miles north of Nunnykirk is the River Breamish Club Site.This is always busy so booking ahead is essential.This site has full facilities with a superb toilet block.Food shopping available either at Wooler or Alnwick.

If you like walking this is a perfect area for you.

The beaches along the East coast are great.....miles of sand, with villages you have to visit......Craster famous for its kippers,Bamburgh with its castle overlooking the beach.......Lindisfarne ( Holy Island )

I could go on and on......can you tell I like it there!!!!

Jo, there's a good site in Bellingham which we used a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name, but I think it's the only independent site there. It's about 1mile south of the town, on the Hexham road, and is central for all the areas you want.

It's a great part of the UK to visit, two years ago we stayed at Dunstan Hill (C&CC site) just 10 or so miles North of Alnwick.

Dunstan Hill is a grass only site with C&CC standard toilet blocks - and takes non-members.

Good points:

Easy walk to the beach - it's a coastal site

Loads of castles on the coast

Holy Island - and the very touristy village

Farne Islands - fantastic for birds at the right time of the year

Alnwick - interesting castle, market in town, and the biggest second hand bookshop in the UK in the old railway station

Great beaches for just plain old walking

Great seaside pubs in small villages with excellent food and beer.

Durham Cathedral is worth a visit - we lived in York and although the Minster dwarfs Durham - it's a beautiful red sandstone

Bad Points:

Weather can be interesting, but with global warming should be hot and sunny

RAF sometimes run training flights over this whole region of the coast - different area, different day - even if you don't like jets it's at most a minor nuisance in the afternoon one day a week.

The NE is a wonderful place to live and I'm sure if I didn't live here I'd want to visit! Apart from the already mentioned attractions there is alos Beamish museum, lovely scenery in Weardale, fantastic walks in each of the Yorkshire Dales, the Cleveland Hills and N Yorks Moors; then there are great places for shopping if the weather becomes "interesting", at least two very good theatres that attract top quality productions...I could go on and on............

I can't add to what has already been said about my native county except you must visit "Alnwick Castle Gardens" and no I don't get paid to advertise!

Last time I was up there (taking my little un to see Harry Potters Castle)we used a very nice site within view of Bamburgh castle.

Thank you for that suggestion GrahamW - I suspect you have cracked my problem of where to take our grandson for a few days during the summer holidays.

Hi being also from the north east (consett) we visit a lot of good sites around the area, if you fancy northumberland try waren caravan park looking over Budle Bay or the caravan club site in Durham.
