Mondeo TDCi. After all it won PCV/WC Towcar of the Year last year. Cracking car, and much under-rated because of its badge. Leave the badge snobbery to numpties and save yourself a fortune.

I've a new shape Honda CRV diesel, a great vehicle only uses its 4x4 function when needed and drives like a car when not towing.

It also has auto trailer stability and you can drive around the world on a full tank (Slight exaggeration there)

Bit late answering but only just joined forum. I can't let this subject go without recommending C4 grand picasso in 2.0 diesel form. Great pulling power, spacious and versatile. Really handy to have extra seats when grandchildren with us but fold down flat in boot when not, unlike people carriers where the chairs go in the garage! Fantastically cheap to run. 47mpg solo and still very good towing.

We are needing to update our 2001 Ford Mondeo car and due to the fact that I need a mobility scooter were considering an estate car, do you know if an estate car would have more overhang and not be so good. Any info useful

Elizabeth - Have you considered a Citroen C5 Estate for your needs. With the rear seats folded flat, the boot has a huge 1658ltrs of space. In the boot there's a switch which lowers or raises the car over a range of 160mm - useful when loading or hitching up. Tows a 1300Kgs van easily and expect around 46mpg solo and 28 when towing.
