I nearly went off on one yesterday after the budget. I saw the headlines and it looked like my road tax for my Santa Fe would £500 extra !!!!

Worry not, on closer scrutiny, I noticed that the £500 increase was for new cars. Thanks God for that !

This project formed the basis of a programme a short while. The testing company Emission Analytics recently produced test results which showed two modern diesels that do meet the forthcoming EU real driving test schedule had far lower NOX emissions than did two Direct Injesction petrols. EA have long said that the hype around diesels has failed to take account of technological progress. And the media and politicians are not addressing the wider issues.

I am afraid we are getting knee jerk reactions again. The day a politician gets a proper investigation before making pronouncements on car emissions will probably never come.

I just came across an interesting article on the BBC site regarding car emissions.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/how_toxic_is_your_car_exhaust
on numerous occasions i have made the point that whilst diesel NOX levels stay constant ,with age petrol NOX levels actually climb. this has been ignored by the powers that be for atleast 2 decades and clearly still isn't in the pipeline to be addressed .. but however you look at the diesel NOX situation just be relieved that for 2 decades CO levels have been far far lower than they otherwise had been if petrol cars made up the vast quantity of vehicles. and of course NOX levels would be lower ,so pick your poison..

Well nearly.
The £500 is in the first year only - when the vehicle leaves the showroom. Thereafter it drops back to the rate applicable now for the relevant CO2 emission rate - which IMSMC is a minimum of £140.

My Passat Estate 140TDi CR BMT is £30 and will stay at that rate. Wah-hey!

I took up the direct debit option when it was first offered, and paid £20.51p per month. I've just had the "renewal" notice, and it's now £21.54p.
Has the old basic £240 pa gone up?

Sorry to disappoint you Craig,

Vehicle Excise Duty, VED or colloquially known as road tax is like all other taxes it is collected by the exchequer, and is not and never was ring fenced for road maintenance or improvements.

Now you'll have set me off on one Craig. Unsuitable, indeed unusable footpaths and crossings are my big problem. This is a big issue for me locally and daily. The parish council aren't interested and it's not in their remit. Took them about 3 months to find a document that outlined their remit. The council who have even done one journey on foot with me say they have no money to spend on it. At the time of saying this a huge road improvement was going on just down the road on an estate and then shortly after the road outside our property was top dressed. No money my foot but when they look at probability in insurance claims against them it's more likely that someone will claim for wheels and tyres for their cars following contact with pot holes than a cripple like me having an accident and claiming against them. End of rant!

Prof, I do believe it was originally intended for roads, hence the original name "road fund licence". it got "diverted" in the thirties, I think.
