Hi There

I had an 03 Freelander 3 door it was the most unreliable car I have ever owned, blown engine (69k miles),blown turbo, duff injectors, leaky hardtop the list goes on. However this was all sorted under warranty and it was a fantastic towcar.

Now have a Freelander 2 and this is most reliable car I have ever owned! 70k in 2 years with no problems at all, and it is an even better towcar.

The survey is a joke, just take the suv section for example, study the criteria that the marks are awarded for.

Clearly the lexus leads, equally clearly the honda crv should NOT get second place.

mechanical reliability is important to me, the interior and exterior looks are a matter of taste, on mechanical reliability both the toyota and xtrail have 4 stars, the honda three!

Also the freelander!

I don't know about the rest of you, but i find car reliability to be the MOST important criteria to me, after all a roller is just a pile of scrap if its prone to breaking down?

I must agree, reliability is very high on my list of priorties along with being able to do the job I'm buying for. I have had 6 Toyotas over 30 years, each has done well over 100k and I have had 1 breakdown in that time. Consequently my experience is such that I stay with Toyota. As you say Ray, styling is a matter of taste, or compromise, reliability is all about getting you there and back.

I did do a test drive in both a Freelander2 and a VW Toureg when I changed cars. Both were lovely to drive, and I'm sure they are great towcars. But having been stranded on a campsite once with a knackered car, reliability is number 1 for me too and I chose a Landcruiser. It isn't as nice to drive, but I'm planning to keep it for 10 years+ so I'm happy I made the right choice (for me).

My niece's Freelander2 is gorgeous, but it takes 10 minutes of playing with the keyfob before it locks when she parks. LR haven't been able to resolve it yet.

I did notice that the Mitsubishi Shogun was praised for its reliability in the league tables. As was the Kia Sorento.

My post gives the impression that the freelander has 3 stars, no it has 4.

Strange how the only two cars to have broken down in the four years of the Practical Caravan/What Car? Towcar testing have been a Honda and a Lexus!

I think you take alot of these reliabilty study with a pinch of salt.

Example if you sell only 100 cars and 10 have been in for a repair thats a 10% failure rate but sell 1000 car and only 10 thats 1% ok more cars more likely to have problems, but high selling cheaper cars people are more likely to accept issues and problems.

On more expensive cars people are less tolerant my MD got the auto box changed in his Range Rover because of a slight whine at 2 1/2 thousand revs.

I place most confidence in the breakdown stats from the warranty companies that are based on hard facts and figures rather than opinions. In the deep dark past of quality training at ICI we were taught how to define quality ie a cheap car with no aircon, electric windows etc etc is a quality car if it never breaks down or has bits fall off, whereas a
