Nissan Pathfinder

Hi Everybody

Im looking into buying a pathfinder as a new towcar ive done some research into the car and also seen the piece in the pc magazine by motty ive also had a test drive i would appreciate any feed back from pathfinder owners on any - or + that anyone has had while in ownership.

Hi Howie, I have had a pathfinder for the last 2 years, and tow a swift conqueror 540 and have had no problems. We tow in England and France, it pulls up hills no trouble. I owned 3 isuzu troopers for 15 years great tow cars . The Nissan is a lot more refined and a softer ride when towing. The reversing camera is exellent when hitching up and not relying on dodgy signals from the missis. Alan
 
went and had a look at one a couple of weeks ago as want a seven seater to replace my 5 seat rexton. I brought up the nissan reliability issues with the salesman and was assured that all necessary improvements had been made to the 2010 model. I've decided against as too much electronic kit on it and the next car I buy will be primarily just for towing so want something much more basic to not have to worry about electronics over the next 15-20 years that I expect to keep the car. That said I was very close to being tempted in all other respects.
 
I would be interested to know what you buy that has less electronics than the pathfinder. My last but one car was an old volvo 240 and the only electronics were in the radio. Good old days.
 
well the only thing out there without too many gizmos is a defender so that's the current direction, and the 2011 see a reduction in road fund licence as well due to improved emissions.
 
There's electronics and electronics. Modern cars do have a lot of electronic extras which can go wrong, but, the electronics that keeps the essentials going i.e. the engine, is going to be the same for all cars including the defender. This is because of all the efficiency / pollution improvements. I presume even the defender has now got the dreaded diesel particulate filter. I believe the early defenders had no electronics whatsoever.
 
To avoid many electronics with a Defender you would have to have a pre-1999 300TDI and for which just about (no all) can be replaced including a full chassis replacement. If you look at Land Rover Owner International you will see how chaep parts are for Defenders including post 1999 TD5 and the more complex TDCi Puma. Howver you would not want to do long journeys in one if you value haering and hips, although even the NVH can be ameliorated. New seats by Exmoor will set you back around £1000. You either love or hate Defenders. I plan to buy one going halves with my son, but it will purely be a recreational car for greenlanes and Pyrenees, Dordogne trips with possibly a few with the van in tow, but without the ladies.
