Honda recommend the same after towing. In most cases however, as someone already mentioned, the final bit of the tow is normally at little more than tickover, so I have rarely let the engine idle. Most people are not even aware of this cooling off, and of those that do, I doubt many remember to do it. I expect that if you are in hot climes this is quite an important point, but, generally it is rare that we have really hot weather. Incidentally, as the new Freelander switches off when stopped for more than a few seconds, how does that cope??

Mitsubishi also recommend that after towing let the car idle for couple of minutes, the wife found this out after reading the manual has its her car.

On the last Shogun we had for 10 years and 106000 mile never bothered, didn't seem to cause a problem but maybe the turbo was engineered heavier than the later one's or just lucky.

I looked at the X-Trail but discounted it due to the turbo issues. I felt that on a used vehicle, I couldn't assume that the previous owner(s) had allowed the turbo time to cool down and so couldn't assume that the turbo wouldn't fail on me!

My old xtrail on about 35k miles, is still on its original turbo, my lad runs it now, and i'm pretty sure he won't be idling the car after a run.

The new xtrail has a separate pump, that cools the turbo after the engine is turned off, but only if temperature is high enough for it to cut in.

Bit late on this but, the Toyota handbook recommends running idle after Towing or Hard Working.

This has been standard advice for turbo'd engines for years.

If any turbo has been working hard, let it cool slowly by leaving engine at tickover before switching off.

I have had turbo diesels and petrols and never had a turbo fail yet, and I tend to hang onto cars until around 150K miles. Even 30 seconds will help prolong turbo liife as it is very rare to be towing, or driving fast and then just turning off the engine, there is usually some time spent in slowing down such as coming into a M Way rest area.
