The original name for the Shadows was "The Drifters" but as there was already an American group by that name they were forced to change it and decided on The Shadows as at the time they were playing in a poorly lit dance hall and their shadows were being cast onto the dance floor.
 
Back on the old TV progs theme, last weekend we attended a charity Bingo evening (I hate bingo!)at the local church. When the caller said,"77,Sunset Strip", the vicar, who's decades younger than me and sitting on our table, said,"Why ever do they call in that!!". I had to explain! Robin.

It was the Drifters, but they found out another band had that name. original members were Terry Smart on drums, Norman Mitham,

Ian Samwell, Harry Webb (Cliff), Liz

Liz I was too young to be a Teddy Boy and too old to experience the flower power and hippy times. I was an in between mis guided youth. Had a sheltered upbringing - still in short trousers until the age of 14.

You are going to the other end of the good music spectrum now - they were the 1970s. Compared to my era they are still in nappies. Next you will be mentioning the Bay City Rollers.
 
I was more peace and love and a flower child as you all realise no doubt right down to split flared trousers and grandad Tee Shirts tie dyed of course and a Kaftan over a cool blue Nehru jacket, anything from Joanie Mitchell to Simon & Garfunkel, Santana to the Stones and Hendrix to Led Zep, Ten Years After etc.

Big Roy mentioned The Double Deckers.

"Shine shine like a star" Aswad's Brinsley Forde was and old mate of mine, he was about 19/20 when he was in the Double Deckers and some may remember him from "Please Sir" and the shows film.

And who remembers Don Partridge Street musician and poet, he was making a hundred pounds a day in the sixties before he became famous and I even had a go at playing his music rig.

His drum had a unique feature if there are any takers out there, and after "Rosie" and fame came his way he had a custom made car that he carried the one man band music rig in.

Name the car and maker ?

He's still around I believe and did an album about 4 years ago.

Real Top bloke and an inspiration to me and others.

Another mate played Session guitar for Macca in the early seventies and wrote for some famous people. He never found fame himself and is on Friends Reunited, listed as a driver for a clinical waste truck these days. Top muso and lyricist and signed over early work and any money rights to Abbey Road people in exchange for a musicians union card.
