There are organisations with a track record of releasing captive borne dolphins in to the wild, but it’s not an easy process. In some areas where dolphinariums have been closed the remaining ones have been relocated to a large area of fenced off sea, with resident staff to monitor their well-being until they die, or monitoring their suitability for release. The place in Tenerife takes pride in the new births that they have, which is a self sustaining way to never close it down.Dolphins can live 40-60 years - so after a decision to no longer use captive dolphins they can't be released into the wild as they wouldn't survive so they live their lives out without being replaced.
