morning all. we are off to spain and portugal in the summer and my daughters (16) passport runs out five days after we return. anyone know if this is ok. many thanks, doylie.
 
Hi Doylie. I'd say it will be alright. If the passport expires 5 day's AFTER you return to the UK then it is still valid. If you're still not sure then give the passport office a call.

As you will need to renew the passport this summer anyway, why not do it before you go? OK you will lose out on a few days but consider the hassle you could be avoiding. What would you do if, for example, the car broke down in Spain and it took 5 days to get the parts to fix it? If one of you were ill and had to stay in hospital for 6 days? The ferry operators go on strike for 7 days and you can't get your sailing?

Maybe a bit far-teched, but my point is, any unexpected delay in returning from Spain could land you in the brown smelly stuff. How annoyed would you be if this happened? Wouldn't you kick yourself for not renewing the passport when you had the chance?
 
Unexpired time in whole months up to nine months can be added to new passports. My posting on 'Renewal of passports' in Overseas Parks and Touring - last posting 21st Dec. - has all the gen. Best get it done as soon as possible to avoid the rush.
 
You usually have to have a minimum of 6 months remaining from your return date. This is in case of accident and you are hospitalised long term or you decided to stay longer than you originally expected to (like back packers decide to dip under the radar rather than come back when their visa's expire).
