A good estate? I`d go for Sandringham!

If not, a Passat (NOT the 90bhp) with Sport spec if you can find one (stiffer, lower suspension for better control)

Start with any Volvo and work backwards there is one to suit every pocket, Early V70's with the audi tdi can be had from a couple of grand

If you have some cash to spend Glenn and want something roomy aswell as heavyish, I can recommend the Seat Alhambra 130Tdi. Shed loads of room, good kerb weight of around 1800 odd Kgs, 85Kg nose weight. A very good piece of kit. Also Passat 4Motion if you can find one. Dave.

Had to add my pennywoth to the auto manuel box. We have had auto boxes for 35 years now and travelled an awfull lot of miles . Last year we changed our 04 X-trail 2.5 sport auto for a Skoda Octavia 2.0 140bhp Elegance with the DSG gear box. What we got was amazing pulling power and mpg over all our other cars. The other thing with this gearbox is unlike our other auto boxes this one slows up right away when taking your foot off the pedal ,so when going down hills there is none of this constant braking, likewise coming up to traffic lights many times i do not brake until the final couple of yards. We would have now prefered the estate version as this is the hatchback with enormous boot.

I actually use a 2 Ltr petrol Laguna estate. Mine is 1998 vintage but has bags of room in the boot as it is a true estate and not the newer Laguna 2 which is a sports tourer and a waste of time.

Either the 1.9dci or the 2.2 turbo would pull your van well. I'd go for the 2.2 as you get slightly better fuel economy and a bit more low down grunt.

Money wise

I've got a VW Passat Estate deisel automatic and can't praise it enough. It's done all I've asked of it and has the added comfort. Overall a pleasure to drive :O)

The alhambra/sharan/galaxy family make excellent towcars in our experience but reliability is poor and dont touch the auto with a bargepole
