Hi,

I have seen a van that we are thinking of buying, the plate on the side of the van gave 2 weights 1200kg and 295kg. Is the 1200kg the maximum weight loaded or is it 1200+295? giving a total of 1495?

The van is an Eldis 1995 four berth?

This weight issue is all that is stopping me from buying the van, as it has to come in coupled with a Mondeo less than 3500kg.

mark, if the van is a 1995 model then the plate should state both the ex works weight (unladen weight) and the fully loaded weight (mtplm). the mtplm is the weight you should go off for matching your car.

depending on what model mondeo you have the outfit should be fine regarding the 3500 kg licence limit as your mondeo would need to weigh in excess of 2 ton to over 3500 kgs. hope this helps you.

Thanks for the replies.

It appears that this van is just too heavy.

1200+295 =1495kg

Mondeo gvw 2185kg

Total = 3680kg

Start searching all over again, I may be ready for next Easter!

I can't believe ANY Mondeo will weigh over 2,100kg. That's the kerbweight of my Mercedes ML 4*4
Hello Malcolm,

GVW is Gross Vehicle Weight, which is the maximum weight of the vehicle fully laden with people, fuel and luggage etc.

Hello mark-sat,

I assume from your posting that your licence only covers you for category B.

This limits you to a Maximum Authorised Mass for the combination of 3500Kg, and that the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle.

If this is your position then sadly the combination is beyond your licence's scope.

Sadly, your choices are rather limited, but selecting a smaller caravan with a MAM of 1315Kg or less would bring you in line.

If time is not an issue, then you could train and take your +E test, that would allow a much wider choice of combinations.
